* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for…
Southeastern Hunt County in north central Texas…

Rains County in north central Texas…

* Until 530 PM CDT.

* At 425 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Grand Saline,
or 12 miles northeast of Canton, moving north at 25 mph.

HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE…Radar indicated.

IMPACT…Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage
to roofs, siding, and trees.

SCU, SWAT Execute Narcotics Search Warrant

Special Crimes Unit along with the Sulphur Springs Police and Hopkins County SWAT team executed a narcotics search warrant in the 100 block of Foscue Street in Sulphur Springs. During the search SCU Investigators located approximately 8.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine. A small child, approximately 9-months old, was on the couch in the residence with one of the defendants. The child was released to the mother with a Child Protective Services case pending.

The two occupants of the residence  were arrested and charged.

Haylee Brooke Chester, 21, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more that 4-grams but less than 200-grams and Abandon Endanger Child Criminal Negligence. She was also arrested on two warrants. One warrant was for a traffic violation and the other for Violation of Probation Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram. She is in Hopkins County Jail being held on a total of $50,000 in bonds.

Also arrested was Gustavo Ivan Molina, 26. He is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more that 4-grams but less than 200-grams and Abandon Endanger Child Criminal Negligence. He is in Hopkins County Jail held on a total of $50,000 in bonds.

Wildcats Loss to Hallsville Sets Saturday Rematch to Determine District Champ

With the Wildcats’ baseball team within two outs of an outright district championship, Hallsville scored a tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning and then got a walk off win with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Hallsville opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. After three straight singles loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly scored one. The Wildcats took the lead in dramatic fashion in the top of the fourth. Triston McCormick singled and Ty Lopez came in to run for him. Ryan Humphries hit a two run home run and the Wildcats led 2-1. They almost made it stand up. The Bobcats scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning without a hit. The first batter in the inning walked and was sacrificed to second. An error allowed the run to score. The Wildcats managed to get out of the inning with the winning run stranded at third for Hallsville. The Wildcats threatened in the top of the eighth with two walks and a stolen base but the inning ended with runners at second and first. Hallsville won the game in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out double and then a two-out single that scored the runner from second.

McCormick took the hard luck loss pitching all eight innings for the Wildcats. He gave up eight hits and three runs but only 2 were earned. McCormick walked only one batter and he struck out 5. Hallsville outhit the Wildcats 8 to 4. The Wildcats’ loss created a tie at the top of the district standings with Hallsville. Both teams end up 10-2 in district play and the teams split two games.

There will be a game to determine the district’s first and second seed at Mike Carter Field in Tyler Saturday at 1 p.m. KSST radio and ksstradio.com will broadcast the game live. The Wildcats go into that game with a season record of 16-7-2.

Lady Cats Softball Season Ends

The Lady Cats’ softball team had their season end as Lovejoy won 12-4 at Lady Cat Park to win the bi-district series 2 games to zero.

Lovejoy wasted no time getting started with two first inning runs and four more in the second. The Lady Cats battled back to within 6-4 after five innings but the Lady Leopards scored the game’s last six runs to cruise to the win. Lovejoy had 12 hits including three home runs and a double. They also stole five bases. The Lady Cats also issued six walks and made seven errors.

Alli Fite pitched all seven innings for the Lady Cats and took the loss. Senior Kristen Allen socked two doubles and drove in three runs with one of them. Sadie Stroud was 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the first. Alyssa Abron was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. The Lady Cats had 9 hits. Both teams squandered some opportunities. The Lady Cats left ten runners on base and Lovejoy stranded eleven.

It was the final Lady Cats game for seniors Allen, Hannah Crowson and Jaye Doughtie. Bailey Haggerty, whose mother’s funeral was earlier in the day, attended the game and sat in the dugout with her teammates. The game was paused at one point as the Lady Cats released yellow and blue balloons on behalf of their grieving teammate.

The Lady Cats end the season with a 22-9 record.

SSHS Band Drum Majors, Color Guard Named Following Try-Outs

At tryouts Thursday night, three drum majors and twelve color guard members for the Wildcats’ band were selected for next school year.

New drum majors for next year are Riley Farley, a junior tenor sax player, Gillian Thomas, a junior percussionist and Brayden Fisher, a sophomore alto sax player. Thirteen students tried out for drum major. Band Director Charles McCauley said all the candidates were good. This will be the third straight for the band to have three drum majors.

Twelve students tried out for color guard and all were selected. Color Guard Captain will be junior flute and piccolo player Celeste Leeds-Laliberte. McCauley said next year’s color guard will be made up of eight returners and four new students.

McCauley said the Band Banquet will be held on Saturday, May 13. He said there will also be a Fine Arts Showcase on Tuesday, May 16. It will feature the choir, strings, the Blue Blazes Drill Team, theatre, the jazz band and the art department.

An Arbor Day Remembrance at SS Health, Rehab

DEBBIE L. JONES, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST AND BART BANKS, MAINTENANCE

Sulphur Springs Health and Rehab has come through a season of loss of valued long-term employees, due to critical illnesses.

On April 28, families and co-workers of four late employees were honored with the planting of four trees in the Memory Garden. Physical Therapist Doug Teitjen was a ten year employee. Former Business Development Specialist Jan Hawkins had a tenure of more than 20 years. Barbara France had an 18-year history as Business Office Manager. Denise Goldsmith, a Nurse, had worked there for three years.

All had passed away since July 2016.

Lady Lions Lose to Bloomberg in Bi-District Game

The Saltillo Lady Lions’ softball team lost to Bloomburg, 20-13 in a bi-district playoff game Thursday night.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. The Lady Lions took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the second. Bloomburg scored four runs in the third inning to take their first lead at 6-3 after three innings.

There was a lot of scoring in the fifth inning. The Lady Lions scored eight runs and Blopomburg came back with three runs and the Lady Lions were back in the lead after five innings, 11-9. Bloomburg surged back into the lead with a big eight run bottom of the sixth and they led, 17-11. Saltillo added two runs in the seventh and Bloomburg countered with three to make th final score, 20-13.

Lady Lion Melissa Groenewold hit a triple and was intentionally walked four times. Melissa Tawil had two doubles and a single. Kasey Sanders hit a double and a single. Christie Gurley had a double. Tori Mobley, Rainie English and Madison Simmons all had two singles. Jordan Sustaire hit a single.

Game Day: Lady Cats Second Game in Bi-District; Wildcats at Hallsville; Lady Cats at Regional Track Meet

It’s another big Friday game day. The Lady Cats’ softball team plays game two of their best two out of three series Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Lady Cat Park. The Lady Cats lost at Lovejoy Thursday night, 17-7. We will bring you Lady Cats’ softball live on KSST Radio from Lady Cat Park at 7:30 p.m. Friday. We will also videotape the game for replay on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable at a later date.

Meanwhile the Wildcats’ baseball team will be attempting to nail down sole possession of the district championship at Hallsville at around 7 p.m. The Wildcats have a one game lead with one game to play. In case of a tie after Friday’s game, the two teams plan to have a seed-determining game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mike Carter Field in Tyler.

The regional track meet is also underway in Arlington at UTA Stadium. Both Wildcats qualifiers in the 300-meter hurdles, Mason Buck and Ryan Humphries, will be playing baseball Friday night and will not participate in the track meet. For the Lady Cats, they have six athletes in seven events at the two-day regional meet. Imani Taylor is in the long jump. Sydney Washburn is in the 3200-meter run. Abbi Baier will compete in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. N’ysa Dugan is in the 100-meter dash. The Lady Cats 4X 100-meter relay team and 4 X 200-meter relay team are competing. The 4 X100-meter relay team consists of Taylor, Dugan, Baier and Sadavia Porter. The 4 X 200-meter relay team has Taylor, Rita Hill, Dugan and Porter.
