Wildcats Travel to Royse City Thursday Night for Second District Game

Concerned with possible bad weather on Friday (September 21), through the weekend and on Monday, the Wildcats and Royse City coaches have decided to move the varsity district football game to Thursday night (September 20) at 7:30 p.m. at Royse City. The move is part of a switch with JV and Freshman contests moving to Friday night. Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens said the underclassmen will play in stadiums Friday, weather permitting. In case of foul weather, Coach Owens said the games would be moved to Multipurpose Buildings and would have scrimmage formats due to issues with space.

Coach Owens said he hoped to avoid another Lovejoy situation that resulted in a canceled game in week two. The Royse City contest is a district game that impacts district seeding and the playoffs. Coach Owens acknowledged that the change involves lots of groups and would be an inconvenience for some.

He said the Wildcats’ coaches will be adding some more things to Wednesday’s practice due to the change. About where the Wildcats are at this point of the season, Coach Owens said they are improving. He said there is still a lot of stuff to work on. Coach Owens described the Royse City offense as smash mouth, often using two tight ends.

He said the Wildcats will need to be great tacklers Thursday night. Coach Owens said the Wildcats need to put the Bulldogs into negative situations with solid play on first downs. Even though the Bulldogs don’t pass much, he said the Wildcats would need to be aware of the pass. Among Coach Owens keys to the game are taking care of the ball and getting points when the opportunity arises.

He said the Royse City defense is one where the players know their assignments. Coach Owens said among their standouts are a nose guard, a safety committed to SMU and some of their inside and outside linebackers. He characterized the Bulldogs as tough, physical and disciplined taking on the personality of their Head Coach David Petroff.

Lady Cat Volleyball Opens District Play Friday Following An Emotional and Mental Drainer Tuesday

Lady Cats Volleyball Coach Justin Maness said the Lady Cats were a little gassed in a match against Nevada Community that followed a grueling five-set win against Pleasant Grove in Wildcats Gym Tuesday (September 18) evening. He said against the Lady Hawks every set was a battle. Coach Maness called it an emotional and mental drainer. He noted the match lasted almost an hour and forty-five minutes.

Coach Maness said the Lady Cats ended up playing eight sets of volleyball Tuesday night. He took responsibility for the tough back to back saying he accidentally double booked teams for Tuesday night. His agreement with Pleasant Grove was made back in December. Coach Maness hopes the loss to Nevada Community will not linger.

The Lady Cats open district play Friday (September 21) at Royse City. He said he expects the Lady Cats to kinda forget the Tuesday loss and come back fresh Friday and play well. Coach Maness said the two matches did allow him to get a lot of players on the court. Erika VanBenthem, who has been out all season with an ankle injury, was able to play some. Coach Maness said he was proud of the Lady Cats for the way they battled in the third set against Nevada Community.
