Spectacular ‘Christmas in Heritage Park’ Open Saturdays Nov. 24 and Dec. 1
Christmas in Heritage Park 2018
Saturday, November 24th & Saturday, December 1st: 5:30 to 8:30 PM 416 N. Jackson Street, Sulphur Springs, Texas
Each year we open the Historical Park to visitors of our Christmas in the Park. The event begins at sunset and last for three hours. While in the park, visitors can enjoy a spectacle of lights, strolling carolers, musicians, a nativity scene and Santa Claus. Free hot cocoa, coffee, punch, cookies and other goodies are served in various building o the grounds. Most of the historic buildings will be open, with volunteers dressed in period costumes to help give the feeling so stepping into the past. Some will also be strolling carolers. The festival will run from 5:30 til 8:30 pm each of the two Saturdays. The $3 admission ticket is eligible for one of our many door prizes to be given away, compliments of local business owners.
The blacksmith shop is alive with the glow of metal and the sparks of burning coal as the blacksmith demonstrates his trade. The general store is filled with turn of the century items and is warmed by a wood stove to warm chilly visitors. Christmas decorations, some handmade, will be for sale there. The Vaden Cabin, a cozy one room log house is warmed by a fireplace where children can enjoy roasting marshmallows. The chapel will beckon with the sounds of live Christmas music featuring Alina Tatum Sanders with a sing-a-long of Christmas Carols. Also the FUMC Handbell Choir will perform. The Atkins House has a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with hostesses serving punch and cookies. There, visitors can hear a dulcimer and violins playing Christmas music. In the Smith Greg House the children can tell Santa what they want him to bring them, and enjoy a drink of hot cocoa. Peanuts and popcorn are also available at the railroad building. This year’s General Store is fully stocked with Christmas ornaments and old-fashioned trinkets and gifts with old-fashioned prices. The volunteers echo, “Come join in the fun as you step back in time to enjoy the start of your Christmas season”!

Winter Gardening By Mario Villarino
Winter is always a season for the garden to recover, build up organic matter and take some time to plan for next year. It is however, not a complete idle season for the gardener. Here the list of recommendation for the gardener for December from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension:
- Place orders for seeds this month so you will have them available when you are ready to plant. By ordering early, you will be more certain of getting the varieties you want.
- Do not get in a hurry to prune woody plants. Late December through February is usually the best time to prune them.
- Reduce the fertilization of indoor plants from late October to mid-March. An exception would be plants in an atrium or a well lighted window.
- Drain gasoline from power tools and run the engine until fuel in the carburetor is used up.
- Drain and store garden hoses and watering equipment in a readily accessible location. The lawn and plants may need water during a prolonged dry spell.
- November through February is a good time to plant trees and shrubs. In the Panhandle, planting is often delayed until February or early March.
- Continue to set out cool-season bedding plants, such as pansies, violas, stock, snapdragons and dianthus. Sweet peas may also be planted now in the southern half of the state.
- Prepare beds and individual holes for rose planting in January and February. Use composted manure, pine bark, and similar materials mixed with existing soil.
- Use good pruning practices when selecting Christmas greenery from landscape plants. Do not destroy the natural form and beauty of the plant.
- Protect your lawn from excessive winter damage by providing irrigation during dry periods.
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs if you have not already done so.
- Prolong the life of holiday-season gift plants by providing proper care. Check to see if the pot wrap has plugged up the bottom drainage. Do not over water. Keep out of drafts from heating vents and opening doorways. Fertilizer is seldom needed the first few months.
- Take advantage of good weather to prepare garden beds for spring planting. Work in any needed organic matter, and have beds ready to plant when needed.
- Do not forget tulip and hyacinth bulbs in the refrigerator. They can be planted after they have received 60 or more days of chilling.
- Want to start cuttings of your favorite Christmas cactus? As soon as it has finished blooming, select a cutting with 4 or 5 joints, break or cut it off, and insert the basal end into a pot of moderately moist soil. Place it on a windowsill or other brightly lit area. The cuttings should be rooted within 3 to 4 weeks.
- Do not spare the pruning shears when transplanting bare-rooted woody plants. Cut the tops back at least one-third to one-half, to compensate for the roots lost when digging the plant.
- Take advantage of bad weather and holiday time to study seed and nursery catalogues as well as good gardening books.
- Berrying plants, such as holly and yaupon, may be pruned now while they can be enjoyed as cut material inside the house.

Man Arrested for Burglary of a Building
An investigation into the stealing scrap metal across the county led to a warrant for the arrest of Roland Vallejo, 33. Vallejo had been the subject of prior investigations into theft but this time he took a washing machine from inside a building in the Seymore community, according to investigators.
Wednesday afternoon, Hopkins County deputies served a warrant for Burglary of a Building, a Felony 2. Vallejo is in Hopkins County jail.
Texas Tech, A & M University-Commerce Flags Fly at Courthouse December 3-10
The Texas Tech flag and the Texas A & MCommerce flag will fly at the courthouse during the week of December 3-10,2018. Texas Tech raised the most money for the Fly Your Flag fundraiser for the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation, according to Meredith Caddell, CEO of the Foundation. Texas A & M Commerce had the most participants to pledge during the event. The $9,006 raised will be used to purchase the 3D Mammography Machine with Biopsy Needle for the new Women’s Center at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Spring.
Not only will the school flags fly at the courthouse but both schools will present a $500 scholarship to a Hopkins County school graduate choosing to attend their university.
The Fly Your Flag event was open to persons who love their college alma maters. The annual event allows the college/university that raises the most money on ‘Fly your Flag’ Day to have their college colors flown above the Hopkins County Courthouse for a whole week. This year the event was conducted on Tuesday, November 20th. The planning committee members, Charles Helm, Michael Lamb, Mikki Eddins, Holly Ragan, and Caddell, along with a few others manned phones and the big board at Celebration Plaza to receive bids.

Deputies were dispatched to FM 17 near Alba, at approximately 5:57 a.m., in reference to an alarm. Deputies checked the building and it was secure.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2503 near Mineola, at approximately 7:39 a.m., in reference to a disturbance. Parties were separated for the day.
At 9:10 a.m., horses were reported out on FM 1801 near Mineola.
Deputies were dispatched to HWY 80 near Hawkins, at approximately 9:22 a.m., in reference to a welfare check. Deputies located the individual and everything was OK.
Deputies were dispatched to the Wood County Court House in Quitman, at approximately 9:59 a.m., in reference to an individual evading detention. Kevin Wood, 31, of Grand Saline, was arrested for Evading Arrest/Detention and outstanding warrants.

Deputies were dispatched to FM 852 near Winnsboro, at approximately 12:29 p.m., in reference to theft. Actors, or actors unknown,stole a four-wheeler from the reporting party’s property. This case has been forwarded to investigators.
Deputies were dispatched to PR 6963 near Alba, at approximately 1:03 p.m., in reference to criminal trespass. Deputies were unable to make contact with the actor to issue the Criminal Trespass Warning.

Deputies were dispatched to HWY 154 near Quitman, at approximately 7:58 a.m., in reference to suspicious circumstances. Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate any suspicious activity.
At 8:57 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2869 near Hawkins.
Deputies went out on an arrest/warrant service to Bermuda St. in Quitman; at approximately 9:22 a.m. Landon Bright, 24, of Quitman, was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 10:46 a.m., in reference to credit/debit card abuse on Bent Bow Lane near Hawkins. Actors, or actors unknown, used the reporting party’s credit/debit card without authorization. This case has been forwarded to investigators.
Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 2:02 p.m., in reference to a scam that occurred on Main St. in Yantis. Deputies gave the reporting party advice and cleared the incident.

November 20th
Deputies were dispatched to FM 14 near Mineola, at approximately 12:16 a.m., in reference to an abandoned vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle and everything was OK.
At 12:51 a.m., cows were reported out on FM 2869 near Winnsboro.
Deputies were dispatched to Petty St. in Hawkins, at approximately 1:30 a.m., in reference to an assault. Deputies spoke with all parties involved and determined no assault had occurred.
Deputies spoke with the reporting party, at approximately 11:15a.m., in reference to fraud that occurred on CR 1590 near Alba. Deputies gave the reporting party advice and cleared the incident.
Deputies were dispatched to PR 8585 near Winnsboro, at approximately 12:20 p.m., in reference to an alarm. Deputies checked the building and it was secure.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 4420 near Winnsboro, at approximately 1:54 p.m., in reference to a disturbance. Parties were separated for the day.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 1993 near Yantis, at approximately 3:42 p.m., in reference to shots fired. Deputies located the individual with the firearm and everything was OK.

Deputies were dispatched to HWY 154 near Quitman, at approximately 6:45 p.m., in reference to a reckless driver. Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate the vehicle.
At 7:21 p.m., cows were reported out on CR 2317 near Mineola.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 4660 near Winnsboro, at approximately 9:04 p.m., in reference to a noise complaint. Deputies advised the individual to lower the volume of the music and the scene was cleared.
Deputies were dispatched to HWY 154 near Quitman, at approximately 10:04 p.m., in reference to an assault that occurred. Casey Cadenhead, 30, of Quitman, was arrested for Assault Causes Bodily Injury of Family/Household Member with Previous Conviction.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 2230 near Mineola, at approximately 10:30 p.m., in reference to an inquest. A male, 89, was found deceased in his residence. The Justice of the Peace arrived and no autopsy was ordered.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 3870 near Hawkins, at approximately 10:50 p.m., in reference to a dispute. Parties were separated for the night.
Deputies were dispatched to CR 1858 near Yantis, at approximately 11:19 p.m., in reference to a reckless driver. Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate the vehicle.
Between the dates of November 13 and November 20, Wood County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to multiple agency assists that included the following: Child Protective Service, Police Departments, Emergency Medical Services and Alba Fire Department.
Between the dates of November 13 and November 20, Wood County Sheriff’s Investigators obtained 3 arrest warrants and arrested the individuals and recovered $4,000 worth of stolen property.

Remember, Honor and Teach: ‘Wreaths Across America’ Comes to Sulphur Springs City Cemetery at 11 am on December 15, 2018
In 2018, Sulphur Springs City Cemetery will join with Wreaths Across America, a nationwide campaign to honor fallen heroes by marking veteran’s grave with a live wreath for the Christmas season. The non-profit organization formed in 1992 to decorate Arlington Cemetery, then expanded nationwide. Last year, graves in over 1,400 locations were marked in 50 states during the all-volunteer effort. Now, it is hoped that all 583 veterans’ graves in Sulphur Springs City Cemetery can be marked in this effort, and in future years, in the cemeteries scattered around Hopkins County.
Dena Phillips Loyd and her husband Jimmy Loyd of Hopkins County, parents of fallen hero Chad Loyd, are spearheading the local effort. According to Dena, the WAW slogan “Remember, Honor and Teach” appealed to her so she reached out to the non-profit earlier this year. Now, Sulphur Springs City Cemetery is on the list for delivery of live wreaths for the December 15 local ceremony. As of today, 275 wreaths have been sponsored, representing a shortfall of about 300 wreaths. The cost to become a wreath sponsor is $15. If you would like to sponsor a wreath, there are several ways, but deadlines are approaching.
You can make a donation of $15 with a personal check to Wreaths Across America and give this to Dena Loyd by November 30. Or you can sponsor a wreath online by December 3. In a special offer, if you sponsor two wreaths with a $30 total, a third wreath will be donated by the non-profit. With participation by interested local persons, the total number of 583 wreaths should be attainable.
There is an army of local volunteers which drive this campaign. Acting in a volunteer role is local veteran James Jones, whose committee will put a small flag marker at each veterans’ gravesite in the city cemetery. Placement of a wreath at each flag will be done by local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. On Friday December 14, the wreaths will be transported across the country by volunteer drivers and fleets as “rolling ambassadors” for Wreaths Across America which will deliver our shipment that day to Dena and volunteers. On Saturday December 15, the public is invited to a brief ceremony in Sulphur Springs City Cemetery at 11am. Following the ceremony, you are invited to walk through the various sections of the cemetery where the wreaths will be placed and name of each veteran spoken at each marked site.
