SSHS to Host Four Team Meet at Track Thursday

Coach Owens also said SSHS would be hosting a meet with four teams Thursday at the Sulphur Springs Track Complex. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. Wildcats Track Coach Matt Young is calling this year’s track season the oddest ever. A case in point was last Thursday’s Royse City meet. With the Wildcats’ basketball team playing at the State Tournament in San Antonio, the Wildcats track team was just over half it’s usual size. Coach Young said instead of 50 athletes, they took about 28 most of them JV members. In varsity results, Coach Young said Eli Sellers won the pole vault clearing a height of 12-feet, 6 inches. He said Rhett Reed set a personal record running the 800-meters in 2:08. Coach Young said he now has three runners who have done the 800 in less than 2:10. He said Landon Thonrton had quite a workout running the 3200-meters, 1600-meters and 800-meters races. Thrower Ryan Hammonds got a sixth place finish in the shot put. Despite the oddness of the track season so far, Coach Young said he likes how the Wildcats are shaping up.

Coach Carrillo Comments on Sherman Game

Coach Carrillo Says Team Had to Knock Rust Off Before Downing Sherman

The Lady Cats’ softball team was away from a field for 10 days before returning Tuesday night (March 12) against Sherman at Lady Cat Park. Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo noted that his team appeared to be rusty after the long layoff and he added it felt like starting the season all over again. The rustiness and a misty rain seemed to hold the Lady Cats back. After the rain ended, pitcher Bailey Haggerty got tougher to hit in the circle and the Lady Cats’ bats came alive in a four run bottom of the sixth that put the Lady Cats up to stay in a 7-4 win. Coach Carrillo said Haggerty allowed just a single earned run and struck out 11. He said Sierra Smith had a good night with the bat and he said Brinklee Driver got a big hit. Coach Carrillo said after struggling some early, the Lady Cats got timely hits when they needed them late in the game. Kate Womack had two hits and two RBI’s. Coach Carrillo said Womack leads the team in hitting right now adding she looks confident at the plate. The Lady Cats, 13-3 for the season, play McKinney North at Lady Cat Park Friday night.

Wildcat Baseball Coach Searching For Answers

Wildcats Baseball Coach Searches for Answers on Offense and Defense

The Wildcats’ baseball team has opened district play with two losses and Coach Jerrod Hammack is searching for answers, especially on defense and at the plate. Coach Hammack says the Wildcats are just not playing real well right now. He says they are not the same team that went 8-1 and was relaxed and had fun in tournaments while playing good people. Coach Hammack says something is different and it’s not good. He says pitching has been a plus. Will Sims has pitching both district games and he has allowed only 1 earned run yet he is 0-2. Coach Hammack says that tells you the Wildcats are not playing well defensively and are making mistakes and errors that extend innings for other teams. He says it also tells you the Wildcats are not swinging the bat. Coach Hammack says the Wildcats are hitting about .126 as a team. He says the Wildcats are not getting runners on base and he says the batters’ approaches at the plate are different now. Coach Hammack says the Wildcats are not relaxed in district games. He wants his team to just play baseball and he says the Wildcats have to get back to that. Coach Hammack says it’s a long season but he wants the team to get back where they were as soon as possible. The Wildcats host Greenville Friday night (March 15) at Wildcat Park. Both teams are 0-2 in district play.

Dan Flynn Becomes Co-Author For House Bill 3

Austin, TX – Representative Dan Flynn (R-Van) is proud to Co-Author House Bill 3 (HB 3), known as The Texas Plan to reform both school finance and property taxes.  The Texas Plan will invest $9 billion dollars above enrollment growth towards student achievement and teacher quality, and property tax reform.

This bill allows school districts to put more of their funds in the classroom, by raising the Basic Allotment $890 more for each student, from $5,140 to $6,030.  HB 3 provides property tax reform by lowering the property tax rates that divert to recapture by 4 cents statewide.

Representative Flynn believes teachers have an important role in molding students into future members of society and they should be paid fairly.  He is proud to support HB 3 which will raise the minimum teacher salary schedule, with $140 million allocated to recruiting and retraining quality teachers.  The Texas Plan also directs funding to schools with greater conentrations of underserved students, establishing a program to fund full-day Pre-Kindergarten, in addition to promoting research-based programs that are proven to advance student achievement including dyslexia identifications, dual-language immersion, and expanded career and technology programs.

“House Bill 3 gives the rural school districts in District 2 the ability to earn and keep more money from local property taxes, provides added programs and resources for underserved students, and updates the critical transportation funding model to a simplified $1.00 per mile reimbursement.  This bill also gives school districts the ability to access an additional $140 million to recruit and retain quality teachers through their own local performance designation system, giving rural districts more resources to recruit and retain top teachers.” -Representative Flynn

C.A.R.E. Center Vision Meeting Set for March 25 at Sulphur Springs City Hall

C.A.R.E. stands for Community, Ability, Recreation and Energy. A proposed C.A.R.E. Center for persons with disabilities may become a reality in Sulphur Springs. A “Vision” meeting is planned for Monday March 25 in the council courtroom of Sulphur Springs City Hall. Refreshments and fellowship will begin at 5:30pm with the program to begin at 6pm. Following a welcome by Jennifer Gregory, City Manager Marc Maxwell will introduce the The Visionaries, or organizers, of the concept. In a press release by The Visionaries Clay Pirtle and Rene Aguilar, who are both parent/caregivers of special needs children, one out of every five Americans has a disability. Special needs communities are on the increase in more populous areas, even as inclusive resources remain scarce. In rural areas, individuals often do without necessary services, leading to challenges by the individuals and their care/support teams. Through this endeavor of C.A.R.E. Center’s Visionaries, it is their personal mission to deliver ultra-inclusive programs for all. Once established, the C.A.R.E. Center would provide innovative, inclusive programs and community partnerships in order to serve individuals with any level of disability across the spectrum of human special needs.

Interested individuals in the public are encouraged to attend this meeting. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. If you would like more information, contact Clay Pirtle at 903-243-1614 or Renee Aguilar at 903-348-1022.

Comedy “Harvey” Takes the Stage at Main Street Theater For a Two Weekend Run

Comedy “Harvey” Takes the Stage at Main Street Theater For a Two Weekend Run
David Woody, veteran director, actor and set builder at Main Street Theater

Harvey is a giant rabbit which nobody can see except Elwood P. Dowd. Harvey becomes Elwood’s best friend. Harvey — a pooka (a mythical being)– is a six-foot tall, invisible rabbit, and when Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood! Eventually, the mistake is realized, and a frantic search begins for Elwood and the invisible pooka, which ends with Elwood appearing, voluntarily, at the sanitarium. In the end, however, Veta realizes that she loves her brother and his invisible his best friend just as they are, and doesn’t want either of them to change.

American playwright Mary Chase produced “Harvey” in 1944 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart. “The play is a comedy but the story carries a moral, about of the importance of acceptance….of yourself as well as others” according to Main Street Theater’s director David Woody. The play will have a six-performance run in downtown Sulphur Springs at 225 Main Street….Friday March 15 and Saturday March 16 at 7pm, and Sunday March 17 at 2pm, with the schedule repeated the following weekend, March 22-24. Tickets are $10 person. Reservations are encouraged. Phone the box office at 903-885-0107 or purchase online at www.communityplayersinc.com.

According to Woody, a 30-year veteran of the local theater, a teen cast member Jaden McGraw plays the lead role, Cindy Braddy is making her debut appearance onstage, and Mike Coursley of the Greenville/Rockwall theater is also in the 10-member cast. The 2019 season is an exciting one, with “The Odd Couple, Female Version” coming up in May, a summer musical with the title to be announced, and a version of “Greater Tuna” in August. A stage adaptation of the fantasy movie “Never Ending Story” is planned this Fall, and ‘A Christmas Carol” for the holiday season. The Community Players non-profit organization always welcomes new talent both onstage and behind the scenes, and members of the cultural organization are also needed. You can become a member, a patron or serve in other positions of support for the year-round theater group. The Sulphur Springs Community Players has been providing live community theater for 40 years, and has seen a number of former players rise to recognition in stage, film, television and other performance careers.
