Local Girl Scouts Help Harvey Victims

On September 9th, at 10 am, on the Square, help the Girl Scouts of Hopkins County give back to the children affected by Hurricane Harvey by donating school supplies: back packs, lunch boxes, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, markers, rulers; anything a child needs for school. Quilt Guild Members Are Active Year Round and During Quilt Show Season

The Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild is over 50 members strong. The guild meets monthly on the fourth Monday at the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center for a light supper and social time, and business meeting and program. Anyone from beginners to persons currently working on a quilting project are welcome to attend meetings and become members. The first-ever Brick Street Vintage Market was an idea of downtown business owner Judy Heilman to bring shoppers to the Sulphur Springs downtown business and dining  district. As 2017 President of the Downtown Business Alliance, Judy brought it up at a meeting earlier this year and support was immediately mobilized. Bookworm Box Initiates Texas Hurricane Relief By Matching Donations

The Bookworm Box in downtown Sulphur Spring is organizing a relief fund for Texas victims of Hurricane Harvey. An initial goal of $10,000 was set on Monday August 28, and in 24 hours, a flood of support caused that goal to be met.  It was then matched by the Bookworm Box, and $20,000 in funds has already been dispatched. Johanna Hicks is in her twentieth year serving Hopkins County as an Extension Agent. She actually worked here in the mid 1980’s, sharing the Home Economics office with agent Janie Crump. At that time, there were five agents in Hopkins County…two for Home Economics, two Agriculture agents and one 4H Agent. Local seniors had a lot of fun during competition in almost a dozen different indoor “sports” at The Roc on Thursday afternoon August 24, 2017. There were competitors in age categories of 50 plus, 60 plus, 70 plus and 80 and above. Medals were awarded to first, second and third place winners in each game. Games included wheelchair race, bean bag toss, horseshoe pitching, nerf javelin, scooter races and 1k. The Senior Citizens Center is raffling off a beautiful quilt made by Teri Ruff and donated by Bill Ruff. “This photo doesn’t do the quilt any justice.” Karon Weatherman said “I put on the Flyer a group photo the the Terrific Tuesday’s group with the Quilt.” The quilt can be seen at the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center. Tickets are $ 1.00 each or 6 for $ 5.00.  You can purchase your tickets from Karon Weatherman at the Senior Citizens Center or Tammi Readon at Terrific Tuesdays.
