Young at Heart; First United Methodist Church

I recommend the Hungarian Goulash.  Young at Heart meets on the third Monday of each month, rain or shine, holiday or not. A pot-luck lunch of dishes you can not get at a restaurant and fellowship is offered. Did I mention the Hungarian Goulash?  If you’re a grandma, a grandpa, or just miss your grandma’s cooking, join them each month at the First United Methodist Church.  All denominations welcomed, even Baptists like me can get in.  Here’s a pro-tip; be careful what you say about The Cowboys.

Goulash…. Peanut butter pie…. Deviled eggs….

Ring that Dinner Bell

Ring that Dinner Bell

I finally made it to the Dinner Bell.  I must admit I was a little apprehensive.  Anyone who views me from the side will attest to my lack of need in the food department.  I was scared it would be awkward for a well fed man like myself to partake.

First United Methodist Church welcomes all.  There was nothing to be afraid of.  All demographics and probably every religion known to man can be found serving or being served. They ring the bell every Wednesday at 11:45AM.

Here’s a pro-tip… Be on time.

Christus Sulphur Springs also offers blood pressure checks.  An on site nurse helps patrons maintain a log they can review with their primary physician.

The Hood Is In; First United Methodist Church

The Hood Is In; First United Methodist Church

New oven and a much needed Vent-A-Hood

Things are looking up in the kitchen at First United Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs. A gigantic Vent-A-Hood now has dominion over heat and fire safety.  The kitchen where Dinner Bell makes it weekly meals is nearing completion.  In addition to the ventilation and fire safely upgrades a new commercial double oven stands ready.

Head cook Judy Gilreath gives a tour to remember. Highlights include the washing station, the French “industrial food processor” and  the time saving Iced Tea machine.  “It’s a community event each Wednesday”, says Gilreath.  Cooks and helpers from different denominations help in the preparation and delivery of meals.

Support for the Dinner Bell come from many sources.  United Way helps foot the bill as well as a weekly sponsor.  The sponsor provides food and helpers.  Sponsors can be a business, a group, or even in memory of a loved one. Sunday School classrooms have a jar where church members make donations as well.

Diners come from all walks of life.  The dinning room is wheelchair accessible. Young, old, needy or just hungry… Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to come.

Dinner Bell is on for January 11th after a 3 week hiatus due to the essential upgrades to the kitchen.

Remodel Delays Cause Dinner Bell Cancellation for Wednesday January 4th, 2017

Remodel Delays Cause Dinner Bell Cancellation for Wednesday January 4th, 2017

An unprecedented 3 consecutive cancellations of the Dinner Bell are due to kitchen remodeling delays.  A larger capacity Vent-A-Hood was installed to deal with excessive  kitchen heat.  Electrical, plumbing and other systems are often more complicated in older buildings.  Several groups that use the First United Methodist Church facilities have been shifted to other parts of the complex, but the Dinner Bell simply could not be accommodated.  FUMC is confident that everything will be back to normal for the January 11th, 2017 Dinner Bell.

The Wannabees!

KSST stopped by the League Street Church Of Christ and met with the Wannabees this morning.

The Wannabees are a group of ladies that come twice a month from and work on their individual projects. They are there the first Thursday and the third Tuesday of each month. The ladies of the Wannabees explained to KSST that they work on their own personal projects, they might get a big project from the Quilt Guild and work on it all together but its not often.

Today there was only 5 ladies, but there are usually 10-15 ladies there at a time. Due to Christmas coming in a few days the other ladies are out shopping and talking with their family and friends getting there Christmas plans ready and set for Christmas Day. The Wannabees said they come twice a week talk, quilt, snack, and visit. They gather at 10 a.m. and leave whenever they please. The Wannabees also wanted to mention that they would love for new people to come and join them anytime for a wonderful time.
