Three Texas Alcohol Producers File for Bankruptcy as Industry Pressures Mount

May 29, 2026 – Three Texas alcohol producers—3rd Level Brewing, Texas Wine Company Inc., and Hilltop Winery at Paka Vineyards LLC—filed for bankruptcy in early April, underscoring growing financial strain across the state’s craft beverage industry.

The filings reflect broader challenges facing independent brewers and winemakers, including rising costs, shifting consumer preferences, and heavy debt burdens that have become increasingly difficult to manage.

In Round Rock, 3rd Level Brewing—a gamer-themed brewery—filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on April 1. Court records show the company owed more than $1 million to a lender while holding just $142,000 in assets. The business has since closed its doors.

Meanwhile, Texas Wine Company Inc., a custom crush facility based in Terry County, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 6. The company reported liabilities of roughly $1.02 million and cited significant cash flow shortages as a driving factor behind its financial troubles.

Also filing on April 6 was Hilltop Winery at Paka Vineyards LLC, a family-run operation in Meadow in Terry County. The vineyard entered Chapter 12 bankruptcy, a form of reorganization designed for agricultural businesses. Court filings indicate the operation owes more than $3.1 million, primarily tied to a 320-acre property, despite holding real estate assets valued between $10 million and $50 million.

Industry analysts say the trio of filings highlights mounting pressure across the craft alcohol sector, both in Texas and nationwide. After years of rapid expansion, many producers are now grappling with post-pandemic overcapacity, higher production and labor costs, and a noticeable shift in consumer drinking habits.

Younger consumers, in particular, are drinking less alcohol or opting for alternatives such as ready-to-drink beverages and non-alcoholic options, squeezing demand for traditional craft beer and wine.

The recent bankruptcies may signal a broader correction in the market, with experts expecting continued consolidation as financially stable companies acquire struggling brands or weaker operators exit the industry altogether.

While some producers continue to thrive, the setbacks for 3rd Level Brewing, Texas Wine Company Inc., and Hilltop Winery at Paka Vineyards LLC serve as a stark reminder that even in a state known for its booming craft beverage scene, success is far from guaranteed.
