Hopkins County Breast Cancer Support Group Hears from Amy Newsom, APRN, FNP-C

May 20, 2026 – Sulphur Springs, Texas – The Hopkins County Breast Cancer Support Group welcomed
guest speaker Amy Newsom, APRN, FNP-C, at its meeting on May 11. Newsom thanked the women for joining the group and for offering themselves as a resource for others, emphasizing the impact of being there for one another. “Support is so important. Whether your cancer journey began years ago or a few months ago, everyone has their own story and needs a support system.”

Newsom continued, “We are meant to find purpose in pain, not stay in it,” elaborating on how the group members use their experience to help others. She also shared how she learned to do the same in her own life after the loss of her son.

“I needed to find a way out of my sadness, and focusing on learning how to help others helped me do that,” Newsom explained. Newsom, a stay-at-home mother of seven at the time of her son’s passing, decided to build upon her nursing degree and become a family nurse practitioner (FNP).

“I could barely find the motivation to eat in my grief, but my husband encouraged me to do something for myself and focus on something new, and it truly rescued me.”

After completing her FNP certification, she studied under naturopathic doctors in Vermont, where she was inspired to integrate holistic approaches with standard-of-care practices. She has since honed her passion by pursuing a certification in the metabolic approach to cancer care and offering one-on-one coaching services to support patients navigating a cancer diagnosis.

The group enjoyed a question-and-answer time with Newsom and refreshments provided by CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs Food Services.

The next support group meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Medical Plaza, 113 Airport Rd, on Monday, June 8. Women who have or have had any kind of cancer are welcome to join and bring a friend.

The group is sponsored by the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. For more information, call (903) 438-4799 or email [email protected].
