Wildcats Basketball Team Used More Up Tempo Approach in Tuesday Win Over Texas High

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta said the Wildcats played really well on both ends of the floor in their 57-48 win over Texas High Tuesday night (February 11) in the main gym at Sulphur Springs High School. Coach Cipoletta called the Tigers a dynamic team that did not go away easily. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats guarded the Tigers better this time than they did in the game at Texarkana. He said the Wildcats offense was pretty good for the most part. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats did endure a 2 ½ to 3 minute scoring drought in the second quarter. He said the Wildcats were able to bounce back from that. The emphasis on a faster tempo and solid defense were keys to the Wildcats run in the fourth quarter that put the game out of the Tigers’ reach. The Wildcats, leading 45-41 in the final period went on an 8-0 run to put the score at 53-41. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats made 5 or 6 straight stops during the stretch. He said the up tempo approach resulted in some easy baskets. Coach Cipoletta said the late run changed the dynamic of the game. Even with raising the tempo, the Wildcats did a good job of protecting the ball. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats assists to turnover ratio was good with 12 assists and 11 turnovers. He said the Wildcats had nearly 25 turnovers in their recent Mount Pleasant loss. Coach Cipoletta said he would have liked to see the Wildcats finish better. Even giving up a few late Tiger baskets, Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats had a big cushion and the finish did not cost them. The Wildcats, ranked #10 in Class 5A, are in second place with a 6-2 record and they are 24-8 for the season. Next they host Royse City Friday night. The Bulldogs were almost able to help the Wildcats Tuesday as they played district leader Mount Pleasant. The Bulldogs led by a point at halftime and after the third quarter. The Tigers outscored Royse City by 10 points in the fourth quarter to take a 9 point win at Royse City.
