October Proclaimed Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Monday morning Hopkins County Commissioners Court proclaimed October “Domestic Violence Awareness Month”. Members of the SAFE-T accepted the proclamation.

PROCLAMATION

     “Domestic Violence Awareness Month”

WHEREAS,   The mission of SAFE-T is to create an environment where violence and abuse are not tolerated in the communities we serve.  Abuse diminishes the full expression of life which is every person’s right. SAFE-T is an organization that provides services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.  Those services include:  24 hour crisis hotline, counseling, support groups, shelter, housing assistance, crime victim assistance, rape crisis intervention, accompaniment to court, legal assistance, educational programs and professional trainings; and

WHEREAS,   SAFE-T’s main office is in Mt. Pleasant and has offices in Titus, Lamar, Hopkins, and Red River counties.  SAFE-T serves 8 counties in North East Texas:  Titus, Camp, Delta, Franklin, Hopkins, Lamar, Morris and Red River; and

WHEREAS,   One in four women age 18 and older in the US have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. One in three adolescents in the US is a victim of physical, sexual or verbal abuse from a dating partner in the past year; and

WHEREAS,   SAFE-T has provided services to 1720 individuals in 2017.  SAFE-T (Sulphur Springs Outreach) provided services to 339 individuals in 2017 and averages 20-40 new clients a month.  The Sulphur Springs office is located at 613 Gilmer Street; and

NOW, THEREFORE I, Robert Newsom, Hopkins County Judge do hereby proclaim the month of October, 2018 as:

“Domestic Violence Awareness Month”

and urge all citizens in Hopkins County to become aware of domestic violence and urge victims to seek help through services such as SAFE-T.  Signed and sealed this 1st day of October, 2018.
