Gala Silent Auction Committee Volunteers Hit the Streets
September 18, 2023 – Volunteers will be hitting the streets over the next couple of months to ask for donated items, gift certificates, or services to be included in the 2024 Hopkins County Health Care Foundation’s 18th annual Gala auction.
The auction runs both online and in person and concludes at 10 pm the night of the Gala, January 27. In order to be respectful to donors, the committee has decided to take a different approach than usual.
“We know how often local businesses are asked to donate, so we are trying to rotate who is asked each year. We are just so thankful for the generosity of the local community for selflessly providing auction items,” says Carolyn McKinney, silent auction chairperson.
Also new this year is to offer more one-of-a-kind experiences to go along with all the great items and gift certificates.
McKinney explained, “The committee has brainstormed some fun experiences and packages for bidders to try to win. A champagne tea in a private home and a local “getaway” are just a couple of the ideas the committee will pursue.”
Auction items will be available to view online starting January 22 at LOLGala2024.GiveSmart.com. The committee hopes to earn $30,000 from the silent auction to help with the overall Gala goal of $265,000.
The deadline to submit auction items is November 1 so that the maximum amount of advertising of the donors and items may be secured.
Those wishing to donate an item, gift certificate, or experience may contact the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation at 903-438-4799 or [email protected].
The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Gifts maybe tax-deductible as allowed by the IRS. All funds raised are used to improve healthcare in Hopkins County.

Wood Mulch in Your Garden From Master Gardener David Wall
September 18, 2023 – There are all sorts of mulches available for your garden, but wood mulch is often called a gardener’s best friend. The object is to cover the soil and protect the vegetable plants by keeping sunlight off the soil, thus lowering soil temperature, while helping to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and slowly increase available nutrients.
Newspapers and cardboard are often used and work very well, but they tend to rot way to fast. One can find mulches of pine needles, compost, hardwood bark, pecan shells and more, but it’s best to be picky! Wood compost excellently fills the bill, but it tends to be black, which means severe heat buildup in the summer sun.
Pine needles make an excellent mulch covering and cardboard, tend to rot pretty fast. Also, if your soil is heavily acidic, pine needles should be avoided. Also, avoid decorative pine bark mulch, plastic sheets and sawdust. I’d also recommend not using cedar and cypress. They work very well, but they don’t rot fast enough!!!
Wood chips for a sawmill, nursery, or hardware store will pay benefits in your garden, and at the end of the gardening year can be raked into the soil for some of next year’s nutrition. You need look no further than shredded organic material, as nothing can beat it.
Mulching should be done after planting is completed. Recommendations vary, but a rule of thumb is to use not less than one inch nor more than 3 inches. Three inches and up tend to keep moisture from penetrating the soil and smother plant roots.
My personal favorite is shredded leaves, particularly shredded oak leaves. There’s an abundance available in the fall. Finely shredded leaves provide nutrients faster than wood chips, provide magnificent cooling, keep the soil moist, prevent weed build up, and are free!!!

Road Work Slated on SH 78 in Fannin County
September 17, 2023 – PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that a project to improve a portion of State Highway 78 north of Bonham in Fannin County will begin Oct. 7, weather permitting.
The contractor, Highway 19 Construction LLC, Sulphur Springs, Texas, was granted 240 working days, weather permitting, to complete this project valued at more than $2.6 million. The target completion date for this work is December 2024.
The contractor will upgrade existing guardrails and bridge rails, and add sloped-end safety treatments to all existing drainage structures. This project will extend along SH 78 from US 82 in Bonham to the Texas-Oklahoma state line.
Travelers along this portion of SH 78 may occasionally encounter short-term, temporary lane closures while this work is underway, officials said.
Motorists who travel frequently in these areas are asked to pay special attention to all barricades, traffic controls and signs, and to reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Almost Half of All Child Car Seats Aren’t Installed Correctly
September 17, 2023 – TxDOT kicking off “Save Me With a Seat” campaign during National Child Passenger Safety Week
AUSTIN – Car seats work. Just ask Mandy Watson who was in a head-on crash with her 11-month-old and 5-year-old as they were going to lunch more than a decade ago.
“Immediately after the crash, I climbed in the back seat. In that moment I knew it worked. I knew their car seats did everything they were supposed to do, because they were still intact, still in place, and I could hear my babies crying,” said Watson.
Watson had been trained to properly secure her children in their car seats, preventing an unthinkable tragedy. That kind of training is exactly what TxDOT’s “Save Me With a Seat” campaign will teach as it kicks off in September to coincide with National Child Passenger Safety Week, Sept. 17– 23, 2023.
“It’s extremely important that parents schedule a car seat check today,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Ensuring car seats are installed correctly is one of the most important things a parent or caregiver can do to protect the smallest occupants in a crash.”
Around 46% of all car seats are misused as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The campaign invites parents to schedule a free car seat safety check by visiting SaveMeWithASeat.org and entering their ZIP code to find the nearest TxDOT traffic safety specialist in their area. TxDOT offers free car seat safety checks year-round.
During September, the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign will include the “Are You Ready for Takeoff?” interactive educational experience and will make stops in eight Texas cities. The campaign’s kickoff event in Houston features retired NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, a father of five who is passionate about safety and educating children. The experience will remind parents of the importance of always buckling up their children.
With the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign, drivers are reminded that Texas law requires all children under 8 — or shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches — to be in a car seat whenever they ride in a passenger vehicle. Failure to properly restrain a child can result in a ticket of up to $250. In 2022, 72 children younger than 8 years old died in traffic crashes in Texas, and 16 of those were unrestrained at the time of the crash. “Save Me With a Seat” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel, like wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nov. 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths.

US 75, Grayson County: from FM 1417 to SH 91 (Texoma Parkway). Watch for shoulder closures and lane shifts on the northbound and southbound US 75 main lanes between SH 91 and FM 1417 as crews work on building new main lanes, bridges, and retaining walls. Watch for lane closures on the frontage roads between FM 1417 and SH 91. A reduced speed limit of 60 mph on the US 75 mainlanes has been set on the mainlanes for this construction project.
Mainlane traffic has been switched from the old mainlanes to the existing frontage roads to allow for construction of the new mainlanes and bridges between South Travis Street and Center Street. During this operation, northbound US 75 mainlane traffic will shift onto the existing frontage road approximately one-half mile north of South Travis Street and transition back to the existing mainlanes at Middleton Street. Southbound US 75 mainlane traffic will shift onto the existing frontage road approximately one-half mile north of Park Avenue and transition back to existing mainlanes approximately one-half mile north of South Travis Street. This operation will allow for reconstruction of the proposed US 75 mainlanes and bridges at Post Oak Creek. During this phase, US 75 frontage road traffic will be reduced to a single travel lane while US 75 mainlane traffic will maintain two travel lanes. Both mainlane and frontage road traffic will be separated by concrete barriers.
All eastbound and westbound lanes of Park Avenue under US 75 are closed to traffic. This closure is necessary to allow for construction of the new overpass at Park Avenue. To detour, eastbound Park Avenue traffic will turn right on the southbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on South Travis Street, and turn left on the northbound US 75 frontage road to return to Park Avenue. Westbound traffic will turn right on the northbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on Center Street, and turn left on the southbound US 75 frontage road to return to Park Avenue.
Lamar Street and Houston Street under US 75 are closed to through traffic with detour signs in place to guide motorists around these intersections.
Eastbound Lamar Street traffic will turn right on the southbound US 75 frontage road, turn left on Center Street, and turn left on the northbound US 75 frontage road to return to eastbound Lamar Street. Video animation of this detour can be seen at the following link.

Local Woman Given Second Chance; Arrested for Theft
September 16, 2023 – A 29 year-old Sulphur Springs woman was arrested at a South Broadway retailer on Friday. When she failed to scan all her items in the self check out area, she was given another chance to scan them all.

When loss prevention noticed Parks had not scanned all her items and intentionally placed those items into bags, staff froze her register. Self checkout staff then explained to her that she should choose another machine and, “make sure you scan all your items.”
Parks did chose another register, and once again failed to scan all the items. She simply placed some of the items into bags. Store staff approached her at the last point of sale and retrieved the stolen items. At around 2:30 PM she was placed into handcuffs and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. Total retail value of the unscanned items was just over $200.
Parks is charged with:
