It’s Rain or Shine for the 2023 Hopkins County Stew Contest
October 27, 2023 – Burford Park was alive with people setting up for the 2023 Hopkins County Stew Contest on Friday. Virtually all the stew sites had equipment and canopies in them.

Early set up is going well and spirits are high.

Brian from CANHelp was busy getting their vender site ready. CANHelp is pulling double duty this year. They are partnering with a local insurance company and a Sulphur Springs City Council member to cook stew, and spread the word about what CANHelp can do.

Hopkins County Sheriff Lewis Tatum and team will be at the north end of Buford Park.
Everyone is certain a little weather will not hinder this beloved event. Grab an umbrella (just in case) and head out to Buford Park in Sulphur Springs.
Kids 12 and under eat free courtesy of Signature Solar. You can still buy your stew tickets online, but that service will end at midnight Friday. You can still buy tickets on Saturday morning if you like.

Historic $345 Million Approved for Pedestrian and Bicycle Projects Across Texas
Major increase in funding to help provide transportation alternatives and safer access to schools and amenities
Oct. 26, 2023
AUSTIN — New sidewalks, bikeways and other types of infrastructure will help improve safety and enhance quality of life in Texas communities with approval by the Texas Transportation Commission of more than $345 million for projects across the state.
The funding will go towards 83 projects that will improve access while providing safety enhancements and mobility options to schools, jobs, public transit and local destinations. This historic investment in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is more than six times as much funding compared to the last Transportation Alternatives call for projects when it was $55 million in 2021.
“This is a major investment in communities across the state that will help make it safer and easier to get around on foot or a bike,” Texas Transportation Commissioner Robert “Robie” Vaughn said. “This optionality supports safety, active lifestyles, health and wellness, and can provide alternatives to traveling by vehicle.”
Unfortunately, Texas is seeing a rising trend of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. In 2022 there were 830 pedestrians and 92 bicyclists killed, and over the last five years both have risen nearly 30%. These projects will help improve safety for people walking, biking, or using wheelchairs, including 24 projects that will go in areas with a high pedestrian crash history.
“People who walk and bike make up about 1 out of every 5 deaths on roadways here in Texas,” Texas Transportation Commissioner Alvin New said. “These projects will help the state move closer toward the goal of zero deaths by giving people a place to walk and bike separate from traffic.”
Some of the projects approved include sidewalks connecting to schools and transit options, shared-use paths benefiting both pedestrians and cyclists, new pedestrian bridges, and 15 planning studies.
All projects were selected after a competitive call for projects from cities and counties across the state. To see a full list of projects, go to txdot.gov.
The Transportation Alternatives program supports local projects that enhance bicycle and pedestrian amenities for people of all ages and levels of ability. These projects improve safe access to multimodal options and connect important community destinations like schools, jobs, downtowns, commercial areas, and medical facilities for Texans who walk, use a wheelchair, or bike.

Heavy Rains Increase Flooding Dangers
October 26, 2023 – Hopkins County received much needed rain overnight, but drivers need to be wary of localized flooding on roadways as the rain will continue through much of the day and the runoff continues after the rain stops.
Turn Around – Don’t drown! Drivers should remember to NEVER drive into water that covers the roadway as it is impossible to know how deep the water may be. As little as one foot of water could float some vehicles. Water rushing across roads and bridges may be moving faster than it looks.

Cumby Traffic Stop Results In Arrest of Security Employee and Avalanche of Drugs
October 24, 2023 – A stop for a traffic violation went downhill quickly for two out-of-state residents as they passed through Cumby in the early hours of October 24th. Police noticed drug paraphernalia in plain sight in the vehicle and the driver of the Chevrolet pickup admitted to having marijuana in the car handing a jar of the leafy substance to the officer. This action prompted a probable cause search of the vehicle which turned into much more paperwork for the officers having to make an inventory of the illegal substances found in the vehicle.

The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Austin Monroe Miller, age 27 from Tennessee. A THC vape pen was found in the passenger seat as well and that pen contained a THC level greater than the amount allowed in the state of Texas. Miller, who lists his employment as “security” with a security company, was placed under arrest and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. A further search turned up an orange powdery substance which Miller admitted to be crushed up Adderall as well as a mushroom was found on his person. Both substances found resulted in additional charges for Austin Miller who remains in the Hopkins County Jail with charges of Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >1 gram, Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 >1 gram, as well as Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility, all felonies.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Zackery Glynn Barnett, age 27 also from Tennessee. Other drugs found in the car were attributed to Barnett’s ownership. Those include a wide variety of drugs including LSD, marijuana, mushrooms, ketamine, xanax as well as several other drugs and THC infused items. Barnett was arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail where he remains on the charges of Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 >28 grams, Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 >1gram>4 grams, and Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 >1 gram. Barnett awaits his bond to be set on all charges.
