PJC Board of Regents Prepare for Restructure of Board; Conceal-Carry Policy Moves Forward

A draft policy to implement state law allowing conceal-carry at Paris Junior College was recently reviewed by the Board of Regents, and plans were made to appoint an at-large regent to represent Lamar County.

The regents were updated on the development of the conceal-carry policy, which was finalized by a committee after comments from April town halls were taken into consideration. The policy will now be reviewed by PJC legal counsel.

With the passage of HB 4276, PJC may now restructure the board to include Lamar County. Discussion centered on taking applications for an at-large regent position to represent the county. Dr. Anglin will finalize a form for applicants to fill out. PJC elections are held in even-numbered years, so the next regent elections will be held in November 2018.

In other business, the Regents:

  • Received a financial report showing that in the ninth month of the fiscal year, revenues remain ahead of expenditures.
  • Received reports on summer enrollment and fall and spring semester retention by course and faculty member (meaning the student did not drop from beginning to end of the semester).
  • Approved private offers to purchase 21 properties previously bid-off by the City of Paris, per the Texas Property Tax Code Section 34.05(i).
  • Learned of an award PJC received at the recent Texas Association of Community College Business Officers annual meeting. The Billy Hibbs Safety Award for exemplary safety practices resulting in the lowest loss ratio in 2015-2016 was awarded to PJC for having the best worker safety record among all community colleges in Texas.

“”How to Protect Your Identity” Program at Sr’s Center
A large crowd gathered at the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizen’s Center on Wednesday, June 28th to learn how to protect themselves from Identity Theft.   Employees from Alliance Bank gave the Program and were on hand to answer a lot of questions that were brought up by those in attendance. Charlotte Crump, CRA officer at Alliance Bank presented the program.
Information was given about several ways on how to protect your identity and what to do if someone does steal your identity. The presenters made sure the those in attendance knew the following:
1) You are entitled to one free credit report per year by each credit reporting agency and that they should take advantage the report.  Call for a Credit Report at 1 (877) 322-8228
2) Check all of your Medical and Charge statements to make sure that someone has not stolen your identity.
3) When giving your Social Security Number only use the last 4 numbers.
4) Change you Passwords OFTEN and use hard ones so you that your information is harder to get.  Use Upper and Lower Case letters, numbers and Symbols in all of your passwords. The longer, the better!
5)  Don’t give out any information over the phone when someone calls asking for it.
6)  If you don’t recognize the phone number calling DON’T answer the phone.  They can leave a message for you if it is important and you can call them back.   Scammers are getting really sneaky on how they can get your to give them your information.
7)  If you get something in the mail that says you have won some money and all you have to do is sign the check and deposit the money then it is a SCAM.. Throw it away.  If something sounds too good to be true it probably is…
8)  Don’t answer questions from a telephone recording.. Just hang up.
9)  Keep your financial records, Social Security Cards and Medicare Cards in a safe place.  A lot of Identity Theft is from family and friends.
10) Shred your personal and medical information
11) Take you mail out of the mail box as soon as possible.

Work Underway in Glass Restroom Restoration

Work is underway to restore the Celebration Plaza glass restroom that was vandalized last week. Workers are redesigning the front door using a different hinge mechanism as well as replacing the one-way mirrored glass panels. Cost of the repair for one shattered panel is over $2500 which led to a state jail felony charge for Wesley Lane Cedillo, 18, who shattered the panel with his ring.

City Manager Marc Maxwell stated that the work has been delayed awaiting the new hinge mechanism  for the door.
