Tira News Feb 1st, 2019

By Jan Vaughn

A special meeting of the Tira City Council was called for Monday, January 28th , for the purpose of discussing the needed repairs on the Community Center, due to the water damage, which happened in December. The group considered the estimates and made their selection. The repairs were scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 30th . Another topic on the agenda was the property insurance. We recently learned that the carrier that we’ve had for several years is not renewing commercial policies.

Joyce Dodd would like to remind everyone about their Bible study at the Tira Methodist Church. The next session is scheduled for February 5 th at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Evelyn Horne attended the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation Gala on Saturday night, January 26 th , at the Civic Center. Evelyn reports, “The theme was “Vegas” and the food, drinks, dancing, silent auction, and decorations were fabulous!”

Chip and I met our daughter and granddaughter, Tiffany and Jaidyn, and Tiffany’s fiancé, Perry Gilbert, of Malvern, Arkansas, at the Campbell gym for our great-grandson Rylan Joslin’s Little Dribblers basketball game. Rylan’s parents, Landon and Laiken, his brothers, Brailon and Slaiden, and Laiken’s mom, Leigh Ann, there to cheer him on, too. After the game, they went to eat at the White Oak Buffet. Chip, Tiffany, Perry, Jaidyn, and I went to Big Smith’s for barbecue, and then Jaidyn and the boys spent the night with us and went to church with us on Sunday morning.

I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community. If you have any news pertaining to Tira residents, past or present, please contact me, Jan Vaughn, at 903-945-2190 or 903-438-6688 or [email protected] .

Two Diabetes Series Available By Johanna Hicks
ksst ksstradio.com

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension provides numerous educational opportunities at low- or no-cost to individuals.  One of those banner programs is diabetes education.  Approximately 12% of Hopkins County residents have been diagnosed with diabetes (higher than the state of Texas and the U.S.) according to the Centers for Disease Control.    Unlike some other chronic diseases, diabetes can be controlled through four key factors:  nutrition, physical activity, monitoring blood glucose and taking prescribed medications.  Diabetes education is near and dear to my heart because of having a son who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2.  He is now 26 years old and he and his wife are the proud parents of two beautiful little girls.

Two separate opportunities are available for anyone wanting to learn more about managing diabetes.  These classes do not take the place of a doctor’s visit, but they do provide research-based, evidence-based information in an easy-to-understand format, led by professionals in the health care field.

Wildcat Cards On Sale; Benefits Athletic Needs Outside Local Budget

January 31, 2019 – Sulphur Springs Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Greg Owens wants everyone to know it’s Wildcat Card time. The cards, which offer discounts and offers from 30 businesses and benefit SSISD athletic programs, go on sale beginning Thursday (January 31). The $20 card is good for one year. Coach Owens said athletes from the 7th through the 12th grades will be selling the cards through February 13.

He said cards sold by athletes in a specific sport benefit that sport. Coach Owens said funds from the sale of the cards are used for extra things to benefit a sport for things the athletes need outside of their sport’s budget. Some funds are used for meals and travel expenses for athletic teams. Coach Owens said a card provides great discounts and may well pay for itself. He said athletes also learn how to deal with people and interact with them.

Coach Owens said he appreciates the businesses on the card and those that buy cards. He said they both are supporting kids. Checks may be written to purchase a card. Checks may be made out to Sulphur Springs ISD or to Sulphur Springs Athletics.

There is no doubt about it, that is Justin Wilson, the famous cajun chef. At first we thought these images we taken at Howard’s. We learned that they where actually taken at the Grand Opening of Gibson’s. Mr. Wilson was on hand to sign autographs. Mr. Gibson spoke at the event. Gibson’s occupied the building we know as Fix-n-Feed at 1000 Gilmer St. 1973 is the consensus on the year.
