Christmas on the Square: Slides, Tigers, and More!

Hundreds of people came out to watch the parade and participate in the activities on the square. There was a petting zoo with baby goats, and bunnies. A carousel for kids to ride miniature horses. Not to mention the huge snow slide which takes a total of five pallets of  bags of ice to last the entire night. The continuously popular white tiger exhibit was also there, allowing families to feed and take pictures with the tigers. Annual Lions Club Christmas Parade

The parade was full of bright lights and Christmas decor. There was a Blue Santa, lots of presents, and many decorative Christmas trees. Streets were packed with many townsfolk who eagerly watched and cheered as the floats passed. The Parade started in Buford Park, and traveled down Connelly to Houston. Trucks and cars of all kinds and colors passed with people singing Christmas carols and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. With the application deadline  of Friday, December 1, it appears that the number of families applying for assistance with Blue Santa Christmas toys will exceed 300. Adela Martinez, Client Services and Community Outreach Specialist at CANHelp has been taking applications since November 1. She says that this year, the number of children in the households is greater while the number of families has remained largely the same. Charles and Sharon Helm, Campaign Chairs for Lights of Life, threw the switch for the 22nd Anniversary Lights of Life Tree Lighting ceremony Thursday night at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs. the Lights of Life campaign benefits the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation. The program included the Sulphur Springs High School Jazz Band, Water Oak Elementary School Kids, and the CHRISTUS Physicians Choir.  Hospital CEO Paul Harvey welcomed those in attendance. Gina Law is Executive Director for Lake Country Casa, headquartered in Sulphur Springs at 216 Connally Street. For more than 25 years, the Cookie Walk has been the sole fundraiser for the non-profit Court Appointed Special Advocate. Gina, her staff and volunteers will stage the Cookie Walk on Friday December 1 in the Family Life Center of First United Methodist Church starting at 9am. Dinner Bell Sponsored by Mother’s Culture Club

The Dinner Bell’s return meal after Thanksgiving break was sponsored and served by the Mother’s Culture Club. The meal served was a  Mexican stackup, including tortillas and butter, sopapilla cheesecake, and a sugar-free butterscotch pudding. Dinner Bell is a free meal served at 11:45 on Wednesdays at the First United Methodist Church, and open to the whole community. Troop 69 All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast is Saturday Dec. 2 at FUMC

On Saturday December 2, Boy Scout Troop 69 will hold a Pancake Breakfast from 6 am until 12 noon in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church in downtown Sulphur Springs. Adult tickets are $7 and tickets for children under age 12 are $5. The breakfast is all-you-can-eat and the menu includes pancakes, bacon, sausage and beverages. The public is invited and tickets are available at the door.
