Homecoming memorial service for James Moten, age 66, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home with Rev. CJ Duffy officiating. Mr. Moten passed away at Christus Mother Frances in Tyler, Texas, during the sunset on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
James Moten was born during the sunrise on August 24, 1959, the son of Etta Ann Moten and Preston Martin. He was also raised by his grandparents, Andy and Etta Moten, in Pine Forest, Texas. James attended Saltillo ISD and graduated from Como-Pickton High School. James was a spiritual, kind, and loving person who would help anyone who needed help. He worked for the City of Sulphur Springs for over 48 years in the sanitation and mechanical department. His passion was drag racing. He had his own car and won several trophies. James was honored for being a long-time service employee for the city.
James leaves to mourn, sister, Barbara of Dallas, Texas; niece, Cherita of Euless, Texas; nephews, Byron, Jaylen, Amayah, Dominic, Carrolton; great nephew, Brandon, Kendel, Damar, Damarion; aunts, Betty Dunlap of Mount Vernon, and Hazel Hatchet of Pine Forest, Texas; special brother and friend, Ronald; Mary and Melissa, who helped take care of him when he wasn’t feeling well; cousins, Twyla, Camille, Charles, Shandra, Bert, Marcus, and a lot of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
James was a dedicated worker and friend who loved his job and drag racing. He is officially retired and no longer in pain.
