Breast Cancer Support Group Enjoys Book Discussion
February 16, 2026 – Sulphur Springs, TX – The Hopkins County Breast Cancer support group met on Monday, February 9, with retired librarian and bibliophile Markeda Fisher serving as the guest speaker.
Fisher discussed some of her favorite books, both fiction and non-fiction, and provided a handout of her
recent 5-star reads. Attendees added their personal favorites and thoughts on the books Fisher
discussed.
Bibliotherapy is a great way to get through cancer or other challenges. In addition to providing escapism
and learning, books can help patients develop new coping mechanisms.
Chair Kristi Brewer led the meeting. Carolyn McKinney provided Valentine-themed treats. Jo Beth
Brewer provided a closing reflection.
The Hopkins County Breast Cancer support group welcomes all. Though the focus is on breast cancer,
women with any cancer looking for a support group are invited to attend.
Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Medical Plaza on the campus
of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. The Hopkins County Health Care Foundation
sponsors the group and assists in coordinating its activities.

Markeda Fisher served as the speaker for the Hopkins County Breast Cancer Support Group,
sponsored by the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation. Fisher discussed some of her favorite books
in a variety of genres. Fisher is holding Becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader: 40 Lessons on Faith I
Learned Along the Way, by Carolyn Clifton Hill, a 1993 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School.
The Breast Cancer Support Group welcomes women with, or survivors of, any cancer since all have a
shared experience. The group meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm. Follow the
