In October, 1955 community leaders in Hopkins County joined forces to raise funds for local non-profit groups. Previously, the various organizations held separate campaigns making financial requests of the same business/people repeatedly throughout the year. Wouldn’t one unified solicitation be a more prudent solution? A goal of $29,500 was set; the start date was October 3; and a victory celebration dinner was scheduled for October 13! But the funds plus an additional $131 were not raised until October 31!
Returning home in February, 1960, Charles Gilreath was selected as Campaign Director for 1960-61 and, his wife, Judy Gilreath became “The Donut Girl!” to serve treats to the campaign workers. Originally the Hopkins County United Fund, it eventually became the Hopkins County United Way. The goal of $29,500 in 1955 would be the equivalent of $355,594 in 2025!
All non-profits may request funding, but they must meet certain criteria and complete a detailed request form. The organization is run by a volunteer Board of Directors under the leadership of Lyndsay Palmer, President; Ashley Crump and Kaitlyn Hankins, Co-Campaign Directors; and Susan Berning as Executive Secretary for 2025-2026. Seventeen organizations will receive funds from Hopkins County United Way this year.
We plan to continue inside dining every Wednesday with the exception of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Christ mas and New Years Day.
