Arlington Police Can Now Send Drones as ‘First Responders’
May 8, 2025 – The Arlington Police Department is pioneering a new approach to emergency response by deploying drones as first responders. This cutting-edge initiative makes Arlington one of the first cities in the United States to routinely dispatch drones to emergency calls, enhancing efficiency and officer safety.
Under the new program, drones will be launched directly from remote locations and arrive at the scene of an incident—such as a disturbance, crash, or suspicious activity—often before patrol officers. The unmanned aircraft will provide live video feeds to officers en route, giving them real-time information to better assess situations and respond appropriately.
Police officials say the goal is not to replace officers but to improve response times, reduce risks, and enhance decision-making. The drones can cover large areas quickly and are especially useful for gaining a bird’s-eye view in dangerous or complex situations. Privacy concerns have been raised, but the department assures the public that strict policies are in place to protect civil liberties and that all drone operations will comply with FAA regulations.
By embracing drone technology, the Arlington Police Department aims to set a national example of how innovation can strengthen public safety while supporting more informed and efficient policing practices.
