Support Group Reflects on Lent and Celebrates Foundation’s Community Pride Award

March 16, 2026 – Sulphur Springs, Texas – The ladies of the Hopkins County Breast Cancer Support
Group enjoyed a message from Father Justin Wylie at their meeting on March 9.

Fr. Wylie shared his reflections about prayer, gratitude, and the season of Lent.

“There are three pillars to a good Lent: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Fasting means voluntary hunger or thirst; almsgiving refers to giving up something you enjoy for the month of Lent and donating the money saved to a charitable cause; and prayer means communication in the spiritual realm.”

Fr. Wylie elaborated, “Prayer can be broken down into the acronym RAPT: Repentance, Adoration, Petition, and Thanksgiving. These four components of prayer help maintain a relationship with the Lord rather than only talking to Him when you have a request.” The message was concluded with a reminder of gratitude. “Gratitude grows our hearts, therefore increasing our capacity to receive greater blessings.”

Afterward, the ladies gathered for a photo with the Community Pride Award that the Foundation won at the 99 th Annual Chamber Banquet in February. The support group, sponsored by the Foundation, is one facet of the large community the Foundation is proud to serve.

St. Patrick’s Day themed treats were provided by Carolyn McKinney. Johanna Hicks gave everyone a hand-sewn coaster made with the help of her sewing students. Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month in the Medical Plaza, 113 Airport Rd. Women who have or have had any type of cancer are welcome.
