A Few Days Left to Purchase Fireworks; If That’s Your Thing

December 29, 2025 – As New Year’s celebrations approach, many people plan to ring in the new year with fireworks, but laws governing their sale and use vary by state and locality.

In Texas, fireworks retailers are legally allowed to sell consumer fireworks during a specific winter sales window that runs from December 20 through midnight on January 1. After that deadline, sales must stop, even if retailers still have inventory. This makes New Year’s Eve the final opportunity for Texans to legally purchase fireworks for the holiday.

While purchasing fireworks during this period is legal, local governments may restrict or prohibit their use, especially within city limits or during periods of elevated fire danger. Counties and municipalities can enact bans due to dry conditions, high winds, or public safety concerns, and violators may face fines or citations.

Fire officials also remind residents that fireworks must be used only on private property with the owner’s permission and never on roadways or public parks. Safety guidelines include keeping water nearby, supervising children, and properly disposing of spent fireworks.

Outside of Texas, New Year’s fireworks laws differ widely. Some states ban most consumer fireworks year-round, while others allow sales only on December 31.

Residents are encouraged to check local ordinances and fire restrictions before purchasing or using fireworks to ensure celebrations remain both legal and safe as the new year begins.
