CHRISTUS Health Launches Drug Take-back Program in Sulphur Springs

November 19, 2025 – SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas – Unused and out-of-date prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication can now be safely disposed of at CHRISTUS Health in Sulphur Springs, thanks to a new drug take-back program.

Located at the emergency room entrance at Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs, the collection receptacles allow for safe disposal of drugs, no questions asked.

“We want to provide the folks in our community with the safe, secure opportunity to clean out their medicine cabinets and make their homes and communities safer,” said Melissa Maeker, pharmacy manager at CHRISTUS Health in Sulphur Springs. “All they do is just come by, look for the receptacle and take it from there. Drugs will be taken and disposed of safety.”

Maeker said that there are some things that won’t be accepted, such as inhalers and needles. As a reminder, drugs should never be flushed down the toilet.

Unused medications in the home are a source of drug abuse in millions of homes, with the opioid crisis in the United States fueled in part by that availability.

On average, one American dies of a drug overdose every five minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CHRISTUS Health has partnered with Inmar to provide the drug-take-back availability and plans to install a receptacle at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Winnsboro in the near future.
