Texas Rangers Hire Skip Schumaker as Manager on Four-Year Deal

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have officially named Skip Schumaker as their next manager, agreeing Friday to a four-year contract with the former Marlins skipper.

Schumaker, 45, had been serving in a senior advisory role with the Rangers since last November and was long considered the leading internal candidate to succeed Bruce Bochy. Chris Young, president of baseball operations, confirmed that no external candidates were interviewed and emphasized confidence in Schumaker’s leadership.

His tenure in Miami was a mixed one: Schumaker led the Marlins to an 84-78 record and a wild card berth in 2023, earning National League Manager of the Year honors, but the club fell to 62–100 in 2024, and he opted not to return. Before that, he played 11 seasons in the majors with stints at St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati.

Bochy, who led the Rangers to their first-ever World Series crown in 2023, and the team agreed earlier this week that he would not return for 2026. He has been offered a front office advisory role. The Rangers finished the 2025 season at 81–81, missing the playoffs after a late-season slump.

In his introductory remarks, Schumaker said that his advisory role helped him gain a deep understanding of the organization and that conversations with Young and general manager Ross Fenstermaker strengthened his resolve to take on this opportunity.

As manager, he now inherits a team that led the majors in ERA (3.47) this past season and set a record for fielding percentage, but struggled offensively. The club hopes Schumaker’s blend of front-office insight, managerial experience, and familiarity with the roster can reinvigorate the Rangers’ push toward contention.
