No Second Chance for Unruly Spectators at UIL Events
August 6, 2025 – Effective immediately, Senate Bill 2929 grants officials at University Interscholastic League (UIL) athletic events the authority to eject spectators without issuing a prior verbal warning. This new law aims to protect the safety and integrity of student competitions by addressing inappropriate or disruptive behavior swiftly and decisively.
Under the new rules, if a spectator behaves in a way deemed threatening, abusive, or disruptive to the event, officials can now remove them immediately. This includes instances of verbal harassment, aggressive conduct, or any actions that interfere with the orderly conduct of the game or endanger participants and attendees.
Supporters of the bill argue that the change empowers officials to maintain control of UIL events and helps prevent escalating situations that could compromise safety. It also sends a clear message that inappropriate spectator behavior will not be tolerated at school-sponsored competitions.
School districts and UIL are working to inform parents, fans, and community members about the updated policy to ensure awareness and compliance. Spectators are encouraged to support student-athletes with good sportsmanship and respect for all participants.
Senate Bill 2929 reflects a broader effort across Texas to reinforce positive environments at school activities and prioritize the well-being of students and officials.
