East Texas Food Bank Concerned Over Funding Cut
July 8, 2025 – The East Texas Food Bank (ETFB) expressed deep concern following the U.S. Senate’s passage of a bill proposing nearly $186 billion in cuts to food assistance programs. In a statement, ETFB emphasized the devastating impact such reductions could have on vulnerable East Texans, particularly children, seniors, and low-income families who rely on programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The organization warned that slashing these benefits would increase food insecurity and place greater pressure on already-strained food banks and charitable resources.
ETFB CEO David Emerson stressed that food assistance is often the difference between families having enough to eat or going hungry. He urged lawmakers to consider the human cost of these cuts and called for bipartisan solutions that prioritize the health and well-being of communities. The food bank also highlighted that demand for assistance has already surged in recent years due to inflation and economic instability, making federal support more critical than ever.
The ETFB pledged to continue advocating for policies that fight hunger and support those in need across its 26-county service area. They called on citizens to speak out and support efforts to protect food security for millions of Americans.
