Senator Joan Huffman Announcers Run for Texas AG

June 23, 2025 – State Senator Joan Huffman (R–Houston) has officially entered the 2026 race for Texas Attorney General, solidifying her place in a rapidly growing Republican field for the open seat. With Ken Paxton stepping down to run for U.S. Senate, the GOP primary is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in memory.

Huffman brings nearly two decades of legislative experience to her campaign. First elected to the Texas Senate in 2008, she currently chairs the powerful Finance Committee and has previously led the State Affairs and Redistricting committees. Prior to her tenure in Austin, she served 13 years as an assistant district attorney in Harris County and later as a criminal district court judge—experience she emphasizes as evidence of her courtroom credentials.

“I will be elected Attorney General because I am the best‑qualified, most experienced candidate who understands the intricacies of every function of state government,” Huffman said, positioning herself as a seasoned prosecutor and legislator. She highlighted her prosecutorial track record and legislative leadership, arguing that the AG’s office requires both legal acumen and institutional knowledge.

Huffman joins a crowded field that includes fellow State Senator Mayes Middleton—who launched his campaign in April—and former DOJ official Aaron Reitz, who filed his candidacy earlier this month. Notably, because her Senate term doesn’t expire until 2028, Huffman can run for AG without risking her current seat.

As the campaign ramps up, Huffman is betting her blend of legal experience, seniority, and legislative influence will distinguish her as the most capable choice to succeed Paxton in the state’s top legal post.
