Saharan Dust Headed Our Way Again

June 4, 2025 – A Saharan dust plume is expected to reach the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area this weekend, with the most noticeable effects anticipated from late Saturday, June 7, into early Sunday, June 8 . This annual phenomenon occurs when dust from Africa’s Sahara Desert travels across the Atlantic, often reaching Texas during the summer months.

For most residents, the primary impacts will be hazy skies and especially vibrant sunsets. The dust particles scatter sunlight, enhancing the colors during sunrise and sunset . Air quality is expected to remain in the “Good” to “Moderate” range, with no significant health hazards anticipated for the general population.

While the general public is unlikely to experience adverse effects, individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies may notice mild symptoms, including coughing, sneezing, or a scratchy throat. It’s advisable for sensitive individuals to limit prolonged outdoor activities during periods of reduced air quality.
