Good Year For Watermelons, Bad Year For Growers
June 22, 2025 – Texas watermelon growers are facing a challenging season as strong yields and high-quality fruit have not translated into profitable market prices. Despite favorable growing conditions that produced an abundant and excellent crop, prices have remained disappointingly low as the peak of the watermelon season approaches.

Growers report that a combination of market saturation and competition from other states has pushed prices down, making it difficult to cover production and transportation costs. The early harvests from regions like Florida and Mexico have created an oversupplied market, placing downward pressure on prices just as Texas growers reach their most critical sales window.
Producers had hoped that high demand during the summer months, particularly around holidays like the Fourth of July, would help stabilize or boost prices. However, many are now concerned that even strong consumer demand may not be enough to overcome the oversupply and pricing challenges.
Industry experts note that this price slump is particularly tough for smaller, independent growers who operate on tighter margins and are less able to absorb losses. Despite the market challenges, Texas watermelon remains a high-quality product, and growers are encouraging consumers to buy local to support the state’s farmers through a difficult season.
