Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez Discusses The Edge and Next Week’s Summer Camp

Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez began The Edge for tennis Tuesday (June 1) of this week.

It is scheduled to continue Mondays through Thursdays through July 25.

This week, the main sessions have occurred Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 P.M. until 9:30 P.M. Coach Martinez has also made courts available Monday and Wednesday from 9 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. for those that could not make the evening sessions.

Both evening sessions drew 27 tennis players each night. Coach Martinez lost only one senior to graduation during the last school year so a large group returns.

He said he also has a good group of freshman that will be joining the program this season.

He said The Edge is important with the fall semester Team Tennis season approaching with main practice starting in August. He expects current varsity players to be challenged by the freshmen for spots on this year’s varsity team.

Coach Martinez said players can expect more conditioning drills, including running at the nearby track, during The Edge this summer.

Coach Martinez is also excited about his SSISD Tennis Camp coming up next week. He said he has had a real good number of campers that have already preregistered including kids from surrounding towns.

Camp is scheduled next week Monday through Thursday, June 7-10, from 9 A.M. until noon at the Wildcat Tennis Complex.

Camp will accommodate boys and girls entering kindergarten through the 12th grades.

As with any of Coach Martinez’s camps, his assistants feature some very talented college players whom he knows.

Cost of tennis camp is $50.
