Wanda Lou Lewis Clayton

Wanda Lou Lewis Clayton was born in the home on February 6, 1932, in Tira, Texas. As the oldest of ten children, she helped raise the younger siblings. She graduated high school, and married the love of her life, W. R. Clayton on September 8, 1948. They were married nearly 55 years.

She has always been everyone’s Meme. She began to keep children in the home when Tim was young, to play with. She served in the children’s department in every church where she lived, and taught at Lake Highlands Kindergarten, and Woodbridge Kindergarten until her retirement. She was so proud of both of her sons, and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always kept the grandchildren for at least one week during the summer, which was always a special time for all. She even used her gift of service in her final years, at Wesley Oaks Assisted Living Center, where she loved, laughed, and “took care” of everybody. They even joked that she was the Activities Director’s Secretary. Meme loved working in the garden all of her life, and even kept the weeds out of the flower beds at Wesley Oaks when she was able. Family was central to Meme: she loved and enjoyed the reunions and get-togethers with her brothers and sisters, and the Tira Reunion was always a highlight to her. Meme lived a wonderful life as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by sons: Larry David Clayton (Suzann Burrell Haas-Clayton) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Timothy Steven Clayton (Leslie Clayton) of Corpus Christi, Texas; brothers: Gary Lewis (Rachel Lewis) of Sulphur Springs, Texas and Richard Lewis; sisters: Dorothy Lewis Hargrave of McKinney, Texas, and Judy Schaare Lewis of Irving, Texas; Grandchildren: Michele Stinecipher, Jeffrey Clayton, Leanna Miday, Krystal Whalen, LT Com. Andrew Clayton, USN, Kate DiCocco, and Ethan Clayton; Great-Grandchildren: Preston Clayton, Matthew Clayton, Brady Clayton, Hannah Miday, Maddox Clayton, Camilla Clayton, Ivan Koenig, Ava Koenig, and Ewan Clayton; Step-Children: Christopher Haas, Jennifer Jefferson, Jonathan Haas, Amanda Haas, Step-Grandchildren: Jackson Haas, Elizabeth Haas, and Emily Haas; Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband; by brothers, Don Lewis, Gene Lewis, Tommy Lewis; and by sisters, Brenda Lewis and Bobbie Lewis.

Special thanks to the staff at Wesley Oaks Memory Care Unit! You all are so precious to us for your love and care for our Meme.
