Mary Ruth Cason was born September 29, 1931 to the late Charlie and Ruth Cason in Windom, Texas. She graduated from Windom High School in 1949 and was elected Senior Class President. She attended Draughan’s Dallas Business College before working at General Investment Corporation. She became a Christian as a young girl, and rededicated her life to the Lord under the ministry of her beloved mentor, Reverend Robert Thompson. Mary Ruth became a member of Hope Family Fellowship (formerly First
Assembly of God Church) in Sulphur Springs in 1978, where she served faithfully for over forty years. Mary was united in marriage to Dalton Dee Philips in 1954. She worked as a homemaker, raising seven children of her own, as well as one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. After her husband passed in 1978, she worked seven years at the Sulphur Springs Public Library. She worked tirelessly to care for the needs of others until her own health began to fail.

One of Mary’s passions in life was writing and storytelling, and it was her life-long dream to be a published writer. That dream was realized when she became the author of Daughter of the Depression: My Life Remembered and co-author of Naomi’s Journey, a retelling of a Bible story for all ages.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Mary Deanna Kerby, two sisters, Sarah Louise and Lena May Cason, and one granddaughter, Jodee Pierson. She leaves to cherish her memory,
one sister, Dorothy Connor of Sherman, Texas, as well as one son and five daughters: Malinda Lopez, Allen Philips, Rebecca Bolin, Polly Ann Nicolay, Sarah Poskey, and Alicia Martin, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
