CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs Investing In Education, Training to Reduce Maternal Deaths

Sulphur Springs – CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs joins more than 200 Texas hospitals to reduce pregnancy-related deaths and complications through the TexasAIM program. Hospitals statewide are coming together to reduce the number of deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage, one of the most common causes of death and injury in the days immediately after pregnancy.

The TexasAIM program seeks to reduce maternal deaths and complications from specific causes by arming hospitals and medical personnel with sets of practices and tools, called maternal safety bundles, that have been shown to make patients safer. The obstetric hemorrhage bundle will help hospitals standardize how they assess women for the risk of hemorrhage, monitor for excessive blood loss and respond in emergency situations.

“It is important that our caregivers are prepared to treat women who may be at risk or respond effectively when needed in an emergency situation,” said Sarah Mills, RN, director of perinatal services at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. “Obstetric hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal death in this country. By taking an active role in TexasAIM, we are ensuring that we have the practices, procedures and tools in place to provide lifesaving care for our patients.”

TexasAIM is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services, the state’s public health agency, in collaboration with the Texas Hospital Association and the Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Health. Participation in this program is another example of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs taking an active role in improving the health of the community.
“Too many women and families are affected by pregnancy complications,” explained DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt. “We know most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, and this kind of collaboration between health care providers and public health gives us the best opportunity to save mothers’ lives.”

In the next phases of TexasAIM, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs and other participating hospitals will implement bundles on caring for women with opioid use disorder and treating severe high blood pressure during pregnancy, two other significant causes of maternal death in Texas.

“CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs is dedicated to providing our patients with the very highest levels of maternal care,” said Martin W. Fielder, MD, FACOG, Chief Medical Officer, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. “By taking part in TexasAIM we demonstrate our commitment to serving this community by giving our providers, nurses and Associates the resources and training to better serve the patients who rely on us.”
