The Wildcats’ football team saw their season end with a bi-district playoff loss to Mesquite Poteet, 57-21 at Lindale Friday night. Pirates Coach Kody Groves said before the game that his team, ten games into the season, still hadn’t put it all together yet. His view may be different now after the Pirates scored every time they had the ball in the first half. They racked over 400 yards of offense to build a 43-15 half time lead. Mesquite Poteet added a couple of second half scores as well. Poteet will face Frisco’s Lone Star High School. Lone Star defeated Little Elm 48-9.
The Wildcats managed three scores. On their second drive, trailing 8-0, the Wildcats got a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Humphries to receiver Simeon Taylor. After Angel Tavera’s extra point kick, by the Wildcats were within one point at the 6:50 mark of the first quarter. In the second quarter, down 28-7, the Wildcats scored on a one-yard run by back Colton Allen. The Wildcats got two extra points as Jose Rodriguez ran the ball into the end zone on a swinging gate play.
The score was 28-15 with 7:16 to play in the second quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Wildcats got the game’s final touchdown on a run by quarterback D’Corian Young. The Wildcats end the season with a 4-7 record. Still, after an 0-10 season in 2015, this team was able to achieve a team goal of returning to the playoffs.
Of their 49 players on the final roster, the Wildcats will lose 17 seniors but 32 players will return. Of those, they will return seven starters on offense an nine starters on defense.
Also representing the district, Texas High lost to West Mesquite by 3 in a back and forth game that ended in a 30-27 score. Marshall lost to Wylie East. Final score there was 69-35. Mt Pleasant faces Highland Park Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ford Center at the Star.
