Tira News by Jan Vaughn 09/03/14

The Tira City Council held their regular quarterly meeting Tuesday night at the Community Center. Hopkins County Fire Chief, Kevin Yates, came to get acquainted with the volunteer firefighters and the council members. He shared that some training opportunities are in the planning stages. The sessions will provide useful training for the volunteers and will help with qualifying for grants, which are available to help with expenses of the department. Malcolm Joslin, Tira Volunteer Fire Chief shared that John Earl Martin is the new Assistant Fire Chief for Tira.
The council voted to cancel the November 4th election. Malcolm Joslin, Sherry Smiddy, and Powell Vickery are unopposed for seats on the council. The group scheduled the Community Christmas Party for Saturday evening, December 6th.
Jackson Dailey, son of Kim and Lee Beck, is the new voice of the North Lamar football team. He is excited about this new challenge and looks forward to announcing the Friday night games in Paris. Kim exclaims, “Go Panthers!”
Dorreice (Horn) Shuptrine, of Plano, was “almost” surprised Sunday, when Jerry and June (Chapman) Vessel, of Campbell, and Doug and Gae (Chapman) Haley, of Crowley, showed up with food and gifts, in celebration of her birthday. She reports that the “food was great and the party was so much fun!”
North Hopkins teachers and students have returned to school, following their summer break. Prior to the first day of classes, the teachers were in training. On two of the inservice days, they and all the staff were treated to lunch at Peerless Baptist Church and at First Baptist Church’s Recreation Outreach Center (The ROC). Everyone appreciated the meals and the hospitality!
