Miller Grove News by Brandon Darrow

September is scooting right along and before we know it fall will be here. I am already looking forward to the cooler temperatures that are supposed to arrive this weekend.

Catching up with some news that happened back in July, Sharon (Weaver) Casey, filled me in on some of the happenings in our neighboring community of Greenview. On July 6 the Greenview Cemetery was dedicated as a Historic Texas Cemetery. The designation medallion was placed on the Greenview Community and Cemetery historical marker that is located just outside the cemetery’s main gate. The presenters that day were Jan Weaver Kimmel, Sandy Weaver Boyd, and Sharon Weaver Casey. They represented the Charles Buchanan Harris Chapter 2531 of The United Daughters of the Confederacy. They noted that the first interment in the cemetery was that of Martha Weaver, the infant daughter of Rev. Green and Nancy Weaver, on July 1, 1848. In 1878 the burial ground was opened to the public and was no longer a “family cemetery”. Another fact about the cemetery is that up until 1884 it was called “The Weaver Neighborhood Cemetery”. That year Green’s daughter, Mary Jane Weaver Moseley renamed the site of the homestead located near the cemetery to Greenview, which was taken in part from her father’s name (Green) and from the “view” or site of the homestead. I know from experience that it took quite a bit of time and effort to be awarded the title of a Historic Texas Cemetery and I think these three ladies did a very good job representing the Weaver family.

My condolences go out this week to the family of Ricky Evans, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 6. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home in Emory. Graveside services are set for Thursday at 10 a.m. in Pippin and Hill Cemetery in Miller Grove. Ricky is survived by his wife, Lori (Woods) Evans; sons, Ryan and Reece Evans; grandsons, Ryder and Ryle Evans; step-grandchildren, Kalin and Bailey Watkins; his mother, Joy (Bloodsworth) Evans; one brother, Dave Evans; one sister, Ginger (Evans) Brooks; and in-laws, Octave and Linell (Barrett) Woods. He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Evans, and an infant son.

Inge Heijligers from the neighboring Center Point community celebrated her 50th birthday Monday, Sept. 8. I think the key that gave her birthday away was the large manikin in the front yard of her home that was dressed to resemble her with a big banner standing in the background. Which, by the way, is a Dutch tradition when someone turns 50. Happy Birthday Inge and many more.

Happy Birthday this week to Clellan Johnson & Jackson Darrow on Sept. 8; Christi (Garmon) Cardwell & Chance Lee on Sept. 9; Alex Craze & Sharon Weatherly on Sept. 10; Vicki Lytle & Frank Weaver on Sept. 12; Dwain Asbill, Jayden Arledge, James Weaver & Braxton Purser on Sept. 13.

Tuesday Russell and Crystal Stillwagoner became parents again. Now their son, Mason, has a little brother. Their son, Colton Reed Stillwagoner, was delivered weighing 6 lbs 6 oz and was 19 inches long. Crystal was the 5th grade teacher at Miller Grove for several years before moving back to the Saltillo school district. Congratulations to the Stillwagoner family!

Deanna Hasten let me know that the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild quilt show is coming up next week, Sept. 19-20. The event will be held at the First Baptist Church R.O.C. in Sulphur Springs again this year. She also mentioned that her grandsons, Riley and Cage Hasten, will be entering the competition in the Junior category. I’m sure several of you may remember from previous years, but there are two Viewer’s Choice awards that are given annual in memory of Grace Lindley Hamby (Deanna’s mother) and Louise Garmon Stripling.

As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is
