Jail Project and Our County Budget

Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom continues to stress that the new County Jail project is coming in below budget so far. Plus the County Commissioners Court has budgeted $400,000 for any contingencies that might arise. Some or all of those funds might be saved. Judge Newsom was also impressed that the Construction Manager-At-Risk was already at work on the site the day after the groundbreaking.

The Hopkins County Commissioners Court has another budget work session planned for Monday but County Judge Robert Newsom hopes to have the budget finished early next month so the court can approve it on September 8. Tax rate for the budget will go up a little over 5-cents to just over 61-cents per one hundred dollars of valuation. The court will have public hearings on the tax rate on August 25 and September 2, both at 9 a.m.
