Extension Leadership Advisory Board Makes Plans for 2015

August is here, which means that planning for 2015 will soon be in full force! As Extension Agents, we plan our calendars ahead of time (actually, we’ll set dates for months in 2015 which haven’t even arrived in 2014, yet!) This can be a challenge, but with the help of our Leadership Advisory Board, Youth Board, Family & Consumer Sciences Committee, Ag Committee, Master Wellness Volunteers, Master Gardeners, 4-H Club Managers, and special events committees, the task becomes easier. With their feedback, these committees help us steer toward important issues and meet specific goals.

Letters should be arriving in mailboxes of the above-mentioned groups concerning a planning/issue identification meeting, but anyone is welcome to join us! If you are looking for an outlet to volunteer, come to our “Meet, Greet, and Eat” session:

· When: Thursday, August 14

· Where: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston (former Chamber of Commerce building)

· Time: 6:15 p.m. registration & refreshments, 6:30 p.m. meeting starts

· Call 903-885-3443 so adequate preparations can be made

We’ll discuss major program efforts for the first half of 2014 and plans for upcoming events, workshops, and seminars for the second half. We are also requesting suggestions on future programming, so bring your calendars and your ideas!

4-H Summer Events

Our 4-H year is winding down, but two fun events are still available for Hopkins County 4-H members and guests!

1) Friday, August 8 will feature our annual 4-H Project Tour Day. We’ll meet at the Extension Office at 9:15 a.m. to travel to Greenville to the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum. Projects related to this stop are clothing & textiles and leadership. We’ll wrap up at the museum and head to the Greenville YMCA at 11:15 for some recreation – basketball, maybe a little swimming (recreation project). Just as our appetites are building, we’ll go to downtown Greenville for a stop at the Hunt County Extension Office for a tour of their garden, prepared by the Master Gardeners (horticulture project). We’ll enjoy lunch and a brief program presented by the Master Gardeners. Our final stop will be Collin Street Bakery, where our 4-H members will participate in a hands-on cupcake workshop (foods & nutrition project).

I will need to turn in a head count, so please contact the Extension Office soon!

2) Another fun event will be the End-of-Year 4-H party, Friday, August 15, 5:30-ish, to be held at the home of 4-H leaders, Jason & Jana Andrews. Everyone is asked to bring a dish…and of course your swim suit and a towel for swimming! Again, please contact the Extension Office so we can let the Andrews family know how many plan to attend. We will give you directions to their home.

3) 4-H Enrollment for the 2014-2015 4-H year will soon be available. We are waiting on the final club charters to come in. Once that happens, enrollment will be open to all current 4-H’ers and anyone else wanting to join. Please watch for announcements!
