Miller Grove, 07/23/2014 by Brandon Darrow

Can anyone remember the last time it was this cool in July? I was so thankful for the cool front that came in last week. It was great to get the rain and a least a few days of the milder-than-normal temperatures. I believe that I heard on the news that we broke a record for the coolest temperature for this time of year. I hate to see it leave but I know it is the dead of summer, so unbearable heat is to be expected.

Sunday afternoon I was working in the cemetery when I saw three ladies walking toward me. After we got to visiting I realized that one of the ladies was Mae Gene (Pennington) Watts who graduated from Miller Grove School back in the 1940s and played on the girls basketball team that went to state. It was very nice to meet her and her daughter and her niece. She said that she now lives near Tyler. We exchanged contact information and then they left to go see the old Watts and Jones homes just south of Miller Grove.

Received a message from Jerri Petty and she said that her husband, Don, has recovered very well from his back surgery week before last week. I noticed from Facebook posts that he underwent surgery on July 10, and was wondering the outcome. Jerri said he is doing much better now. I’m sure Don will be out riding those horses again in no time!
Monday night I saw my cousins, Billy and Patsy O’Brien, at Roma’s Italian Restaurant in Cumby. I was having supper that night with Brian Evans and Miranda Frobish.

Jarrett and Alyssa Covington are now the proud parents of a son, Jonathan Isaac Covington. He weighed 8 lbs 12 oz and was 20.5 inches long. Jarrett was a 2012 graduate of Miller Grove School. He is now serving his country being enlisted in the United States Navy and stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. Grandparents are John and Merry (Burkett) Covington of the Bonanza community. Proud uncle is Patrick Covington who just graduated from MGISD in 2014.

Happy Birthday this week to Joe Scott & Bo Smith on July 20, Tammy (Burns) Thornton & Dustee Daugherty on July 21, Sue Ann Sparks on July 22, and Greg Abbott on July 25. Happy belated 55th Anniversary to my Aunt Betty and Uncle Mack Phillps on July 18.

As you travel the highways and byways don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove. Please send me any newsworthy information. My email address is [email protected].
