Highway and Water Safety Urged for Memorial Day Weekend

The Texas Department of Public Safety is increasing patrols during the Memorial Day weekend.  According to a news release, troopers will be looking for drunk drivers, speeders  and those violating seat belt laws.  Troopers are participating in the Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign.  During last years holiday, troopers arrested 413 drunk drivers, issued 5439 speeding citations and gave out 1053 tickets for lack of seat belt or child safety restraint.

boatingThe long Memorial Day weekend is a good time to consider boating safety.  According to the latest recreation boating stats from the U.S. Coast Guard, Texas is #4 in the nation for boating accidents and #2 in the nation for boating fatalities.  There were 39 boating-related deaths in Texas last year.  In 84% of the cases, those that drowned were not wearing life jackets
