“Updated” Tree Replacement Downtown

City work crews are having to replace four Magnolia trees on and around the downtown Plaza in recent days. One tree was broken in half during a storm, a driver on Main Street wiped out a tree and two of the trees on the Plaza died. Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell says Magnolia trees keep dying in those two spots. He adds if the trend continues, he’ll switch to Cypress trees. Maxwell speculates the surface water is too close to the roots in those two locations. He says Magnolia trees in all other locations are thriving; especially the most mature ones on Main Street. Maxwell says it’s been a pretty good year for tree health including ones in the city’s parks.
