List Animals You Can Hunt From a Chopper in Texas Just Increased

June 9, 2025 – Texas has officially legalized the aerial hunting of Aoudad sheep, adding them to the short list of animals that can be shot from helicopters for sport. Previously, Texas law permitted aerial hunting of certain invasive species such as coyotes and feral hogs. With this legislative change, Aoudad sheep—also known as Barbary sheep—are now included due to their growing population and ecological impact.

“I’m looking at this hillside that’s covered in aoudad, and they’re majestic. They’re really cool creatures. But off to the side are two mule deer who are native. And the aoudad are physically displacing them.” — Jason Sabo is a part-time resident of Fort Davis, in Jeff Davis County

Aoudad sheep, originally native to North Africa, have thrived in the rugged terrain of West Texas since their introduction decades ago. Wildlife experts and ranchers have raised concerns about their competition with native species, such as desert bighorn sheep, for food, water, and habitat. Aerial hunting, which is already used as a population control method for other invasive species, is now being promoted as both a management tool and a recreational opportunity for hunters.
