Sulphur Springs ISD Announces Annual Science Fair for Grades 4–5

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX — Sulphur Springs Independent School District (SSISD) has officially announced its 2026–2027 Science Fair, inviting young minds in fourth and fifth grades to demonstrate their scientific curiosity and problem-solving skills.

The district-wide event will take place on December 2nd, running from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.

Event Day Schedule

Parents and participants can expect a structured schedule for the day:

  • 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM: Drop-off period for students and their project boards at the Civic Center.
  • 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Judging session.
  • 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM: Provided lunch for participants.
  • 12:45 PM – 1:00 PM: Awards Ceremony.

Competition Categories

Students can enter projects across three distinct categories:

  • Chemical/Physical: Focuses on physical and chemical changes in matter, work, energy, heat, light, sound, electricity, simple machines, and magnetism. Projects involving glassware or lab equipment require direct adult supervision.
  • Behavioral/Biological: Explores plant biology, molds, fungus, bacteria, protists, as well as human and animal behavioral responses. Projects must maintain a sample size of more than one or two subjects, strictly forbid harming live animals, and require principal notification and signed permission slips if fellow students act as test subjects.
  • Inventions: Focuses on original, practical, and marketable creations designed to solve real-world problems or satisfy a need while demonstrating clear evidence of the scientific method.

Path to Regionals

The stakes are high for participating students. Up to four students per grade level from each district will be selected to advance to the Region 8 ESC Science Fair, scheduled for the end of January.
