May 26, 2026 – The Sulphur Springs High School UIL academic team has won the state championship.
The 21 Wildcat academic competitors compiled 284 points at the state meet Monday and Tuesday at the University of Texas to 189 for second place Lindale.
The Wildcats also outpointed Lindale to win the regional meet, 321 points to 296 ½.
Sulphur Springs won the UIL academic district meet by an overwhelming margin, totaling 902 points to second place Texarkana Pleasant Grove’s 276.
It’s the second UIL academics championship for Sulphur Springs in three years. The Wildcats won the 2023 state championship with 196 points to second-place Salado with 133.
At the state 4A track meet in Austin May 15 and 16, Sulphur Springs sprinter Creed Whisenhunt took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.31 seconds. Whisenhunt also won the district, area and regional 100-meter dash competitions.
The Wildcats’ 4X200-meter relay team of Whisenhunt, Keyshawn John, Gio Ibarra, Deuce Timmons and Jaxon Haire placed fourth with a time of one minute, 26-point-77 seconds, just 38-hundredths of a second behind first place Brock.
