Time to Plant Onions in Texas

February 9, 2025 – Planting onions in the spring in Texas requires proper timing, soil preparation, and variety selection to ensure a successful harvest. Onions thrive in cool weather, making late winter to early spring (January to March) the ideal planting window, depending on the region. Since Texas has a warm climate, short-day onion varieties such as Texas 1015Y, Southern Belle Red, and White Bermuda perform best, as they begin bulb formation with 10-12 hours of daylight.

To prepare for planting, select a well-draining site with loose, fertile soil that has been enriched with compost or organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal for optimal growth. Onions can be planted as seeds, sets, or transplants, though transplants tend to yield quicker results. Space them about 4-6 inches apart in rows, ensuring good air circulation.

Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry spells, as onions require consistent moisture but should not be overwatered to avoid rot. Applying mulch can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every few weeks to promote strong growth. By late spring or early summer, the onions will be ready for harvest once their tops begin to yellow and fall over.
