Alvis Gilbert

Memorial service for Alvis Eugene Gilbert will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at County Line Baptist Church in Miller Grove, Texas.

Alvis Eugene Gilbert was born September 8, 1927 in Rains County to Eugene and Ruth Gilbert. He passed away on September 30, 2024 at the age of 97 in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Alvis graduated from Rains High School at the age of 17. At the age of 18, he got a special invitation from the president of the United States of America beginning with the Salutation of “Greetings”. Alvis served his country with pride, as a Staff Sergeant at Walter Reed Hospital in WASHINGTON, D.C. until December, 1946. After the Army, Alvis worked for the Dallas Housing Authority for 32 years as a superintendent. Later he became Vice President of J.O. Lockridge, the largest insurance loss company in the southwest. Alvis met his wife Eddy Rene Smith at her aunt and uncle’s house in Dallas and was immediately smitten. He and Eddy Rene (Smith) married on June 9, 1956 in Emory, Texas.

Alvis was a member of the Hopkins County Masonic Lodge, Hella Temple, and a proud member of County Line Baptist Church where he enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School (VBS), the County Line New Year’s Stew, and the Walking Club superseding all the others by 3 miles (yes, he was the oldest too).

Alvis is survived by his wife, of 68 years, Eddy Rene. He is also survived by his daughter, Kay Gilbert Garrett, husband Bill, and their daughter Lexy. His son, Doug Gilbert, wife Roberta, and their children, Kari (Curtis) Kinsey and daughter Shannie, and Stoney (Macy) Gilbert and children Eli and Kason, and Holly Henson (Brian) and son Cutter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
