Lady Cats Softball Clinch 15-5A Co-District Championship

The Lady Cats bats came alive early and often as Sulphur Springs cruised to a 16-0 victory on Senior Night over the Pine Tree Lady Pirates on Tuesday, Apr. 20.

The win gives the Lady Cats softball team a share of the 2021 District 15-5A District Championship.

Five Seniors were honored Tuesday night; 2B Matti Smith, 1B Nylah Lindley, #12 Braylea Brewer, DP/RF Addison DeSmet, RF/CF Grace Magnuson, and #25 Katelyn Shields.

Coach David Carrillo and his squad exploded in the bottom of the first, reeling off 6 runs to quickly jump out to a 6-0 lead over the visiting Lady Pirates.

“I’m really proud of the way our kids got off to fast start,” the Lady Cats softball head coach said.

Sulphur Springs then added on another run in the bottom of the second to make it 7-0. But the Lady Cats offense was not done there, as they got 5 more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 12-0 over Pine Tree.

The Lady Pirates could not find any answers for Sulphur Springs’s offense. They did not score a run in 4.5 innings.

The Lady Cats, on the other hand, added on 4 more runs in the bottom of the fourth as the game was called in the middle of the fifth to the tune of a commanding 16-0 win over Pine Tree on Senior Night.

Coach David Carrillo and his team had 4+ runs in 3 of the 4 team’s at-bats.

Addison Caddell had a great outing versus the Lady Pirates on the mound, getting the victory versus Pine Tree after pitching a complete 5 inning game, giving up no hits and no runs. Caddell, normally the 3B for the Lady Cats, walked 2 Lady Pirate batters and struck out 11 in the victory. Caddell added 2 hits and 2 RBIs a piece at the plate.

Coach Carrillo had nothing but praise for his Junior 3B/P. He said Caddell is a hard worker and stepped it up.

“She’s willing to pitch, [play] third, it don’t matter” Coach Carrillo said about his star 3B/Pitcher, adding that “Addison is gonna do whatever Addison is gonna do to help our team.”

It was not an errorless game, though, as the home Lady Cats committed 2 errors. The Lady Pirates gave up 9 errors, several of which allowed the Lady Cats to score.

The victory over Pine Tree gave the Lady Cats their 12th straight victory, with 11 of those wins coming against district opponents. The Lady Cats season record is now 20-3 overall.

Coach David Carrillo said he thought his team has gotten better every game, both offensively and defensively.

“It’s been a great year and a lot of kids have really stepped up,” the Lady Cats head coach said, adding “we’re just blessed.”

The Lady Cats softball team has now won the last 3 district 15-5A championships, with two of them (2018 and 2019) being outright championships.

The win also gave Coach Carrillo’s team a share of the district championship, as Sulphur Springs tied Hallsville, as both teams garnered 11-1 district records to end the season.

The two teams will play later this week to decide which Lady Cat team will be the first seed from district 15-5A in the playoffs.
