Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez said his team tennis players had fun at bi-district competition Tuesday (October 16) morning. Their match was moved from Van to indoor courts in Texarkana due to rain. Coach Martinez said a very good Whitehouse team defeated the Wildcats, 10-0.
He said the Wildcats were competitive with three competitions going to third set tiebreakers. #1 boys singles player Jonah Kirkpatrick, mixed doubles players Jeaux Leigh Cantu and Michael McCord and #3 boys doubles players Jordan Gonzales and Logan Schumacher, all were involved in tiebreakers.
Coach Martinez said the Whitehouse coach told him that Sulphur Springs was a tougher opponent than he was expecting. Coach Martinez said his Wildcats played with energy, attitude and great effort. He said the experience has made his players want to return to playoffs next year and advance. Coach Martinez said team members are hoping to overtake the district’s #2 team Lindale next season. He called the goal a good one and attainable.
The Wildcats lose only two seniors. They will certainly miss Chase Crouch and Zoe Wilson. Coach Martinez said all of his team tennis players will be playing spring tennis next semester. He said seven tournaments have been scheduled to places like Paris, Arlington and near Denton.
