Wildcat Team Tennis Opens Season At Denison, Sherman Monday, August 6

The Wildcats’ team tennis squad is practicing at night this week preparing for a heavy schedule of tennis the first two weeks of the season. Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez has scheduled ten matches the first two weeks of the season.

Coach Martinez said his players put in the work this summer and are in shape. He said they are ready for the schedule. The Wildcats open the season Monday with a match at Denison at 8:30 a.m. and then at Sherman at 1:30 p.m. The Wildcats travel to Waxahachie for a 10 a.m. match on August 7. Then come home matches against Spring Hill at 10 a.m. August 8, versus John Tyler at 8:30 a.m. August 9 and against Terrell at 9:30 a.m. August 11. The next week features road matches at Hallsville and Jacksonville and home matches against Forney and Marshall.

Coach Martinez is excited about his team’s chances this year. He said some new freshmen girls are remarkable. He expects quite a bit from Jo Lee Cantu, who has fared well in some Tyler junior tournaments. With returners Kathryn Hurd, Zoe Wilson Harleigh Stegient and Heather Harris, Coach Martinez expects to have 8 or 9 girls to choose from.

He also has nine boys returning. At the top is Jonah Kirkpatrick. Chase Crouch brings senior leadership. Coach Martinez said some of the guys took their lumps playing as freshmen and sophomores but are now ready to turn things around. Included are Aaron Lucas, Jordan Gonzales and Logan Schumacher.
