The Lady Cats’ soccer game at Pine Tree on Friday was just like ones the two teams played last year. Low scoring. Lady Cats Coach Joel Bailey said last year Pine Tree won at home with a lone goal on a corner kick while the Lady Cats also won at home with a lone goal on a corner kick. He said it was more of the same Friday night. The match was tied 0-0 at the half. Coach Bailey said he told his team at the half that whoever scored the first goal would probably win. He said just two minutes into the second half, Mileena Zirretta broke free, got to a loose ball, settled it down and drilled it into the net. Coach Bailey said the Lady Pirates’ goalkeeper got a hand on the ball, but was struck so hard it went into the net. He called Zirretta lightning in a bottle. Coach Bailey praised the Lady Cats defense. He said keeper McKenna Gammill made ten saves including one where she was fully extended. Coach Bailey said the back line and midfielders were also very good. He called the win a total team effort. The Lady Cats are 1-0 in district play and 9-2-3 for the season. The Lady Cats now face Marshall at Prim Stadium. Marshall will not have a JV team until their basketball season is over. Tuesday’s match at Prim will be a varsity only game starting at 6 p.m. The Lady Mavericks lost a one-sided contest to Texas High on Friday.
