Lady Cat Volleyball Defeats Texas High to Take Half Game Lead in District Play

The Lady Cats’ volleyball team surged into first place after they edged by Texas High in a pulse pounding five set win, 3-2 in Wildcats Gym Friday.

The Lady Cats got off to a fast start. Perhaps playing their best set of the year, the Lady Cats dominated Texas High, 25-5. Erika VanBenthem served for six straight points. Sadie Stroud later had nine serves for points. Texas High fought back to even the match with a set two victory, 25-23. The Lady Tigers got the last two points to win the close set.

The Lady Cats then took set three, 29-27. This set was tied at 27-27 and this time the Lady Cats got the last two points to take a 2-1 lead in sets. Then Texas High overwhelmed the Lady Cats in set four, 25-14 to even the match at 2-2.

Set five was another battle. With the score tied at 14-14, Autumn Tanton had a big kill to give the Lady Cats a 15-14 lead. Tanton then teamed up with Kaylee Jefferson to block a Texas High kill attempt that dramatically ended the match with the Lady Cats winning, 16-14.

Jefferson had a team high 17 kills and Tanton added 13. Setter Anden Hammack had 41 assists and led the team with three service aces. Libero Maggie McGlamery had a team high 21 digs. Sadie Stroud added 12 and Imani Taylor and Jefferson adding ten apiece.

The Lady Cats have now won 8 straight district matches and are 8-2 in district play. Texas High slips to 7-2 in district, just a half game behind the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats have a very big match coming up next. They travel to Pine Tree next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
